About John

I am a writer and actor who loves to tell stories that provoke thought and reveal our common humanity... Know that writing is not easy. It takes patience, hard work and discipline. Every person who puts pen to paper goes though this. I've aquired the skills of writing the hard way, making mistakes, searching for short cuts that don't exist and falling for the temptations of complacency. So, if you're struggling with writing, you've come to the "write" place.

Writing, like any art form, is subjective. Meaning - what's good for one writer isn't neccessarily good for another. Likes and dislikes vary on style, taste and experience. My philosophy on teaching is similar. I'm not here to mold you into a mini version of me. My job is to help you find your own distinctive voice, your unique style of story telling. I can only share what tools have worked for me, what knowledge I've absorbed during my journey as a writer. The rest is up to you.

If I can help imporve your writing skills, that not only makes me a better teacher. It also makes me a BETTER WRITER.

I have been teaching/tutoring for over ten years. The focus of my coaching is in the areas of non-fiction, screenwriting and memoir. However, the elements of good story telling are the same, no matter what the genre.

I am the Amazon Best-selling author of "RAdio Master - The Life and Times of Sports Broadcasting Great Ted Husing." (Langdon Street Press.)

My screenplay "Band On the Run," the story about the making of Paul McCartney and Wings 1973 landmark album has been optioned and is currently in development.

Presently, I am working on a memoir about my days in the food service industry. I am also a member of Naked Angles Theater Company in New York.

"Writing is the best form of thearpy. And significanlty cheaper."

Every form of writing is story telling. The most enjoyable part of working with my students is when they discover a break through in their writing. Words pop. Pages turn.

Encouragement from fellow writers and friends. I've always believed in "paying it forward." Many have helped me along the way. I can only hope to do the same.

B.A. Degree in English from Duquesne University.

Graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.

I have studied under the tutelage of accomplished writers such as Sophronia Scott, former People Magazine editor and best selling author ("All I Need to Get By" - St. Martin's Press) and Mark Neveldine, writer and director of the cult classic films "Crank" and "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance."

I ask each student for a commitment of at least (2)two sessions. I call this method "Taking Turns."

- (Your Turn) The intial session together is usually spent discussing goals of the piece being worked including ideas, structure, and developing a concrete plan moving forward...

- (My Turn) The second session is spent on feedback, breaking down the first/second draft, what worked, what did not, followed by suggestions on improving the writing...

* On or up to 8-eight pages of a story/script/essay. Longer pieces can be considered based on time commitments and availability.

I've worked with high school studens to seasoned writers.

Yes, credentials and experience are important. But, moreover, enthusiasm and passion for the the work surpasses all. Surround yourself with people who will make you a better writer. Original ideas are rare. So steal from the best and make it your own.

Dealing with this global pandemic has been challenging if not frustrating for all of us. However, I've tried to use the time wisely, writing for my new video anthology series called "The Covid Chronicles," finishing a new full-length play, and submitting several stories and ideas for publication.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
- What are my goals as as writer? Whether it's finishing an essay for your hight-school history class or writing the great American novel, what do I want to accoomplish?

- How much time and effort are you willing to put into the work?

My mind set is: Be the best you can be, only if it's for a little while.
