About Jessica

As a Western Governors University student studying Secondary Education for Chemistry teachers, I have a strong understanding of both Chemistry and teaching teenagers. Tutoring is an excellent way to practice my passion while working toward my Oregon Teachers License.

Before committing to full-time education, I was a Freight Supervisor overseeing twenty employees. I learned skills like conflict management, motivation techniques, and goal setting. My experience with my team helped me find my passion for education.

Working as a supervisor, I had many experiences teaching rules and skills. Working with my team showed me how much I enjoy the process of developing a working relationship and using that individualized knowledge to communicate complex ideas. I think teaching others is a mental challenge and highly rewarding in itself.  



I am currently attending Western Governors University for the Bachelors in Secondary Education, Chemistry. WGU is ranked in the 97th percentile of teacher certification programs by the NCTQ. I am one year away from obtaining my teaching license in the state of Oregon and Utah.

Learning can be a difficult, stressful process. It's my job to make learning easy and fun. That's why I always begin by getting to know my students. Understanding their interests and passions gives me the insight I need to tailor their learning. During this time I also ask how recent assessments have gone to gauge our next steps. 

If the student is understanding less than 30% of the information, I need to reteach the subject. If the student understands between 30% and 80%, we need to discuss the concepts and see where misconceptions lie. If the student understands 80% or more of the subject, we need to brush up on smaller mistakes and practice slightly harder materials. 

After confirming the students' current understanding, we can work on development. I believe in a Constructivist model of teaching, so addressing the content itself will be built on inquiry-based learning. This means I will use discussions and small projects to develop the student's understanding. 

After each tutoring session, I draft a short summary of what was discussed and what achievements the student made. This summary will be provided to the student as well as the parent. 

After the student has a better grasp of the broader concept, we can work on applying the information to the assigned schoolwork. 



I've mostly worked with teenagers and young adults through high school and college programs. I am not opposed to working with younger students, but I don't have much practice with them.



Honestly, your peers are your best resource. They have so much more information like what your teacher is like, what the class has already learned, what problems usually show up on the homework, and how the tests are formated. Before hiring a stranger to help, I suggest asking your peers for support. I know it can be scary, but people learn best together. 



My university uses a classroom simulator called Mursion to help students practice interacting with special needs students and handling difficult situations. Recently, I did a simulation involving a student with special needs (Dev) and a student who believed the unequal treatment was unfair (Evan).

Dev was given an extension on an essay due to difficult home circumstances and Evan felt he deserved an extension too. It was a difficult conversation to have with Evan. He was frustrated and dismissive and unwilling to compromise. Eventually, I convinced him that people who have unique situations should be given equal opportunities. 

During the discussion, I felt joyful. Evan was challenging, but I enjoyed being in the situation, working through it with him. After the simulation, I felt like my desire to be a teacher was reaffirmed. I was so excited, I called my boyfriend at work and talked about it for over an hour. 



A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you are having trouble with the whole chapter and nothing is working for you, start at the beginning. What are we trying to do? Are we trying to solve quadratic equations? Are we trying to understand periodic trends? What is our goal? If you don't understand that, I would begin by searching for the answer and reframing your studying with that goal in mind. 

If you understand the goal but not the process, go through the steps. Where are you struggling? What is the goal during each step? If you can't answer these questions, bring your practice work to your teacher and ask if they see the miscalculation. 

If you have other needs like hearing impairments, visual aids, or difficulty reading written work, don't hesitate to ask your teacher for help.
