About Trace
Dear Potential Cello Student,
Hello! My name is Trace Johnson and I am a professional cellist and Suzuki Certified teacher with 15+ years of experience. I am certified in Suzuki Pre-Twinkle, Book I, and Book II pedagogy which makes me an excellent option for beginners of all ages, (adult and youth), in addition to being a master teacher for more advanced students. In Wisconsin, I have had several high school students successfully audition into WYSO's top orchestra, Youth Orchestra, and continue on to national undergraduate music programs across the United States. I currently maintain a studio of mixed adult & youth students who range from Book-I level cellists to advanced, post-high-school graduates.
During my six-year tenure at the West Palm Beach Suzuki School of Music in West Palm Beach Florida, my students successfully auditioned for first-chair appointments at the Palm Beach Youth Orchestra in West Palm Beach, Florida, Florida Youth Orchestra in Davie, FL, Youth Orchestra of Palm Beach County in Boca Raton, FL, and the 2020-21 All-County Middle-School Orchestra of South Florida. In 2020, I had several students who won auditions at the 2020-21 Florida All-State Orchestra, successfully auditioned for the prestigious Dreyfoos School of the Arts High School in West Palm Beach, Florida, and were competition prizewinners at the Festival of the Arts Competition in Boca Raton, Florida.

Trace Johnson is a cellist known for his effortless musicality and fierce commitment to music-making of all styles and genres. He has appeared as a chamber musician, soloist, and orchestral musician throughout the United States and internationally. Equally at home teaching in concert performances or teaching in the studio, Trace is a devoted and thoughtful communicator who enjoys a varied career in both worlds. Trace has collaborated in concert with eminent artists Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Garrick Olson, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Augustin Hadelich, and Gil Shaham. He is a member of the cello section in the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, the Madison Symphony Orchestra, and the Sarasota Orchestra. Trace has also recently appeared with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Sarasota Opera, and the Artosphere Festival Orchestra in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
He is currently in his final year of doctoral research as a Collins Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studies cello with Parry Karp. Trace received his Bachelor of Music Performance degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music in Cleveland, Ohio, and his Master of Music degree and Professional Performance Certificate from the Lynn Conservatory in Boca Raton, Florida. Trace Johnson currently performs on a 1924 Emile Blondelet cello from Paris, France. Trace enjoys reading historical fiction, creating lists and takes great satisfaction from fixing broken household items of all kinds.
