About Hayley

A Smith College graduate with a degree in Biology eager to bring my travel and research experience to my students!

I will be attending Northeastern Law School in the fall to get my JD in Environmental Law. I have lots of experience with curriculum development and enactment as well as childcare. I am currently working as a substitute teacher for a variety of grades and subjects, from elementary to high school. This includes working as a long-term substitute for AP Environmental Science. Previously, I've worked as an aide in a nature preschool, as a camp counselor and as a camp program director.

I'm most interested in working with high school students on advanced subject matter relating to natural sciences but I also have experience teaching younger students. Additionally, I am happy to work with students on their reading and writing skills, essay editing etc.

I have a degree in Biology with a focus on ecology as well as a minor in Marine Science and Policy. While attaining my degree I undertook a multitude of research projects that have resulted in a plethora of skills and practical experience as well as a unique take on critical thinking. These projects ranged from forest conservation in Madagascar, coral reef surveys in Belize and Tonga as well as more domestic projects like rocky-intertidal surveys in Maine and water quality testing in Massachusetts.

Through these experiences I became skilled in the use of statistical programs such as excel and STATA as well as a strong science-writer and presenter.

When starting with a new student it is important to establish a strong working-relationship built on trust. I start by getting to know the student and learning what they're struggling with the most and what their goals are long-term. I then work with them to establish short-term goals and strategies to get there. I think the most important thing when working with a student is that it's team oriented rather than teacher-student pedagogy.

I would ask about their practical experience, because if they have used the skills/knowledge they are set to teach you then it means that they fully comprehend what the subject is and how to apply it. I would also ask what ways they learn best because that would be an indicator of how they plan to teach you.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Can I understand this subject on my own if I just put in a little more time/effort?

Am I not understanding just what we're currently learning or am I not understanding what we're learning because it requires previous knowledge/skills I don't possess?

How much time/effort am I willing to contribute to this subject?

In most cases I'm looking for $25-$35 an hour based on difficulty of subject/ intensity of help-needed. But I'm willing to work with parents/guardians to find a price or schedule that meets their needs.
