About John
Welcome, Athletes!
This is Coach John and I'd like to introduce myself. I played youth baseball for 11 years and competed up through the varsity high school level as a lettered athlete (Phillips Academy, Andover - NEPSAC division). I've coached youth baseball (ages 5-12) for the past 8 years, for both San Francisco Little League and San Francisco Youth Baseball League.
My coaching style is holistic, adaptive, and hands-on, with a player-centered approach to training, motivation and competition. I develop a regimen that meets the player at his/her level with a focus on building on their unique strengths, while also addressing challenges - both physical and mental - that may prevent them from reaching their potential. My approach is collaborative rather than top-down, as I try to really understand every facet of a player and partner with them to address their goals.
Feel free to reach out if you are interested in learning more about my background and approach to training. I look forward to connecting with you!

Perfect! John was a terrific coach to my two sons during the off season for little league. We did about 8-9 months of Saturday sessions and both my kids showed significant improvement in all of their baseball skills when the Spring 2025 season began. John tailored his coaching to the individual needs of each kid, was kind, motivational and just an all around great guy!

We had the pleasure of having John for a coach for 2 years. He is knowledgeable, patient, and supportive. He knows how to work with a variety of players and meet them where they are at with their development. He can make adjustments to form with pitching, fielding, and hitting in a positive way that shows real results on the field in games. He is an asset to the baseball community!
John is a very thoughtful and strategic coach. He is patient and thorough with assessing players in the beginning. Then he is able to identify a player's strengths and build upon them whilst effectively identifying the areas they need more work and how to strengthen those skills.
His coaching style is subtle and about small adjustments. After watching players practice, he then asks them to make small manageable adjustments when doing drills. These small adjustments lead to big improvements and he is great at boosting confidence. We really appreciated his coaching.John was my sons Little League coach. He genuinely cares about every kids experience on his team and he makes the extra effort to ensure that everyone is learning, improving their skills, and enjoying the game of baseball. He always goes the extra mile and often spent extra time with my son after practice to help with his pitching mechanics. We were lucky to be on his team, and I highly recommend him - both as a quality person and coach.
John is an outstanding Little League baseball coach. His patience, dedication, and commitment to nurturing both the athletic and personal growth of his players make him a great coach.
John was my son's Little League coach last fall which was our first experience with SFLL. I was so happy with John's coaching approach, positive reinforcement and overall guidance that we were immediate bought into the SFLL program given our experience with John. My son progressed and was able to try new positions at the urging of John, and I saw my son's confidence and overall baseball acumen develop and grow. John is a great coach and pays close attention to each individual kid, meeting them where they're at with the coaching they need at the time. He is calm, fun and I really hope we end up on his team again in the future!
Coach John led my son's team last season and I saw firsthand how each kid developed. John came to practice prepared and was really good at coaching each player regardless of the skills they brought day one. Huge improvements in throwing mechanics, fielding, pitching, and especially situational awareness. I recommend highly!
John has been a great coach with my younger son. He's helped develop pitching skills as well as catching skills. And beyond just the physical drills, John has helped my son gain confidence in leadership roles on the team (catching and pitching can be both exhausting and a high-pressure role, but it never felt that way under John's leadership).
My son has been coached by John multiple times and it's always a wonderful experience. John's knowledge of baseball fundamentals is second to none. From hitting tips and drills, to explaining in detail the proper form/motion for pitching, he knows it all. Most importantly, his enthusiasm for kids and teaching shines brightest. He is always positive and encouraging, and genuinely excited when he saw my son improve...which, thanks to John, happened a lot!
Coach Byrnes is a fantastic coach. Not only does he create a welcoming environment so that his players actually enjoy playing, but they learn a lot too. My son made tremendous gains playing Fall Ball with Coach Byrnes, and we hope to do it again soon.
