About Maya
I am a classically trained ballet dancer with over 12 years of experience. An injury has taken me out of professional work for the next 6 months to a year, so in this time I'd like to share my experience and knowledge with dancers of basic - pre professional level
I trained at the Rock School for dance education under Bo and Stephanie Spassoff for 8 years before finishing my training at San Francisco Ballet School. In this time I performed principal and soloist roles in both contemporary and classical ballets, as well as dancing Corp de ballet parts with the company of San Francisco Ballet. While in San Francisco I had the opportunity to perform on tours at Lincoln Center in New York, Garnier Palais in Paris, and venues in Philadelphia, North Carolina, and Canada. After dancing as a paid trainee in San Francisco, I was hired into the Corp de ballet of Royal Swedish Ballet I'm Stockholm, Sweden. Between my many years of school I attended summer courses at Boston Ballet, Packfic Northwest Ballet, and Canada's national ballet school.

My typical process is to first learn the history of the dancer's training. This includes how often the student takes ballet class, at which studios, how long they've been dancing classical ballet, history of pointe work, and past summer courses. After that depending on what areas the dancer would like to improve, I will teach a full ballet class, starting at the barre. From here weaknesses will become apparent, and corrections will be applied and approached from multiple angles until the student has an understanding of what is correct. Ballet is beautiful in that it fixes itself from the bottom up. A strong base of training at the barre often leads to improvement in every aspect of your movement. I also put a strong emphasis on enjoying the work that you do. When something "clicks" and your muscles understand the movement, it's one of the best feelings that we chase our whole careers!
