About Maryssa
20 years experience in acting. Acting is an art form that requires all of you - mind, body, imagination, and passion. I love working on all these aspects with students to unlock their own creative expression.
In addition to having worked as a professional actor in theatre, film, and commercial, I have also run a theatre company, taught acting at many levels, and coached students and professionals to successful auditions. I love working with all kinds of people, from a student auditioning for an acting program to someone who has never acted before and is looking to build confidence. I am caring, fun, and detailed in my work. I will meet you where you are and get you to the next level!
I used to be in corporate training, and then decided to shift my focus so that my "day job" would be more in line with my passion. I started teaching theatre at summer camps for kids, then directed high school students and young adults in Shakespeare productions, then worked with inmates doing Arts in Corrections, and directed professional actors in productions with my theatre company.
I studied theatre and acting at Mills College, Marymount London Drama School, and Moscow Art Theatre at Harvard University. I have been a professional actor in the Bay Area for twenty years, was the Artistic Director at a theatre company, and have coached at all levels, from children to college to tech workers to inmates. Creativity is what humans do best, and I love sparking the creative imagination through this art form.

Before meeting I would like to have a phone conversation to understand the student's experience, preferences, and goals. Then I can bring some appropriate material to the first session. At the first session we would do a short warm-up then dive into some acting material, whether it be improv, film scripts, Shakespeare or other theatre material. I don't tell students how a scene or monologue should be done, but rather give them the tools to arrive at their own creative decisions.
- kids: drama classes and directed in plays
- high school students: taught advanced Shakespeare classes and directed in plays; taught film acting; coached for college auditions
- adults: directed in Shakespeare plays, led workshops in improv acting
- professional actors: directed in plays, coached monologues and scenes for auditions

Maryssa is a generous and dedicated coach who pushes her students to be specific and deeply present within their work. Whether diving into a scene or crafting a monologue, Maryssa uses her years of experience to ensure that her students arrive at a place of confidence in performing and that their performance is multi-layered, imaginative, and connected.
Whenever I worked with Maryssa as a young actor she always treated me like an artist. Her level of precision, trust, and creativity always pushed me to be the best I can be.
