About Edar
Born and raised in Northern California, I recently graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, where I majored in Molecular Toxicology with a minor in K-12 Science and Math Education. I've been tutoring for the last 6 years, with previous students ranging from the 5th grade to college students. I tutored General Chemistry at the Student Learning Center at UC Berkeley, where I worked 1-on-1 with students at our drop-in sessions as well as led study groups twice a week ranging from 30-50 students in size. Currently, I am based in Buffalo, NY, where I am working as a high school teacher in the Buffalo Public Schools while pursuing a Master's degree in Urban Adolescent Education. As a young professional not too far removed from high school standardized tests myself but with the experience necessary to guide students through its challenges, I believe that I would be a valuable asset to help students overcome challenges and reach their aspirations.
Tutoring is what got me to where I am today. Growing up in an extremely competitive environment and entering into one of the top colleges in the world, I was afraid to ask for extra help due to my unfounded fear of appearing less capable than my peers. However, after finally caving in and seeking tutoring, I found it to not be "extra help", but just somewhere I can go to to talk to like-minded individuals and reinforce content I learned in class. I am an extremely passionate advocate of peer-to-peer tutoring, where tutors who have been in the same shoes as their tutees can emulate with their students and can pass on personal tips and tricks to help others succeed. Once I started tutoring, I've found that my favorite part of it is helping students achieve the "click", where they go from struggling with concepts to speeding through problems with a smile on their face. Tutoring is what led me to becoming a teacher, and my drive to help others succeed and to bring a smile to their faces has not dwindled since.
I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in Molecular Toxicology and a minor in K-12 Science and Math Education. After graduating, I wanted to get out of the Bay Area for a bit, so I am currently credentialed in New York teaching in the Buffalo Public Schools in Buffalo, NY, while working towards my Master's degree in Urban Adolescent Education. I have also spent a summer teaching Algebra 2 to high school students in Philadelphia for summer school. I have been tutoring professionally for the last 6 years. For the subjects that I am tutoring specifically, I received a 5 on the AP Chemistry and Biology Exams, an 800 on the SAT2 Math Exam, a 2350 on the SAT1 (old version), and a 36 on the ACT.

First, I ask students to send me a description of themselves, their hobbies, their interests, and their future aspirations. I believe that teaching works best when both parties are comfortable, so I enjoy getting to know my students on a personal level. Next, I ask my students to send me anything to show their current progress, what their goals are, and when they want to achieve them by. With this information, I develop a personalized plan for how to achieve their desired goals in the time frame given.

He’s Awesome! He knows how to explain everything well and is very kind. He helped me a lot in chemistry and he never made me feel like I was struggling. I can count on Edar to be kind, helpful, and compassionate. Edar is the best!
Edar was a super clear, consistent teacher who explained general chemistry concepts patiently and established a structure to his class that allowed for me to stay on track with the material for the entire semester!
Edar tutored me in calculus, combinatorics, and statistics. Before I found him, I was on the verge of failing the class; none of the university's resources were able to help me, the course material just wasn't making sense. Edar was able to show me the material through a learning method that he knew would work for me. He is great at identifying opportunities for improvement that you, yourself don't even see at first. After working with him for some time, I was able to earn an A in the second semester of the class. Besides his very patient and compassionate tutoring style, he has fair rates.
