About Jessica

I am a committed high school tutor with first-hand, recent, and relevant experience on how to ace academic and professional pursuits. I have tutored for 3+ years, with experience in teaching math of all levels, ACT Prep, and Microsoft Suite, having successfully tutored people to land job placements, attain great scores on standardized tests, and win nationally-acclaimed tournaments such as MathCounts. My work approach lies in creating student-focused study materials based on their needs.

I feel most rewarded when I see my students succeed in what they set out to do. It is an amazing feeling to know that you are the one that fostered and help make a difference in someone's academic, and even personal life, and encouraged the growth that took/takes place. Even the smallest "That makes sense!" brings me excitement and satisfaction.

I love to teach, and have always been the one student in class who found immense joy in explaining concepts and helping other students understand material. I decided I would like to tutor in my free time starting my freshman year of high school, and I have done it since then! My biggest joy when I teach is when I feel like I have successfully helped my student get to where they want to be with whatever they need, and there is nothing more rewarding than knowing you made that difference.

I am currently a high school student, with 3+ years of tutoring people at all different education levels (from 5 yrs old to 50 yrs old). I have a 36 ACT score, a 1470 PSAT, and have gotten 5s on every AP test I have taken. I work with the Red Cross as a part of Volunteer Services (HR), and have 3+ years of customer service experience from that end, with valuable communication skills.

I generally start out with a diagnostic test on the material they are looking to learn, whether it be subject matter pre-test for Math or Science, or a practice test for ACT. For more skill-based needs like learning how to use Excel, I always start off with teaching how to identify parts of the user interface, and concentrate on familiarizing basic functions like saving and creating documents. The first few sessions I also pay close attention to their working style, and what resources they respond best to, whether it be written notes or detailed diagrams. Most importantly, it is important to establish a strong communicative relationship between me and my student; Ice-breakers are a must!

I have worked with children as young as 5 years old on fundamental math skills, and my oldest student is in their 40s, and looked to change their career through learning new job skills. I have also worked with every range in between, from middle school students struggling in grade-level academics to high school students looking to max-out test scores.

I think something important to look at is not only qualifications and experience, but also their approach to teaching and how it fits with what you need. Tutors come in every shape and size, and its important that the tutor you choose, especially for things such as standardized tests, has an approach that fits with the issues and needs you have. Having a tutor that teaches from the basics when you already have a 33 on the ACT is bad fit, just as a tutor who expects you to have knowledge on how the test works when you have never taken it is a bad fit.

I recently met one of my students unexpectedly at a social event, and they excitedly exclaimed to me that they had placed among the top 5% of scorers on the ACT, a huge acheivement for someone of such young age. I remember being pleasantly surprised and overjoyed that it was my assistance along with their hard work that helped attain those heights, and it made my day to see my work bearing fruits.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. How long do I have to study for what I need?

2. How much am I willing to commit to my goal?

3. What am I looking to get our of my tutoring?

4. What are some things that I know for sure I need help on?
