I have studied and learned languages all my life starting with two growing up- English and Greek. I also studied French for many years and in college I learned Spanish and Italian, earning me a degree in Spanish. How did I become fluent in these languages? Speaking and listening helped me build confidence and fluency. These are two of the most important skills that I focus on to build confidence in my own students. I also focus on learning vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing. The vocabulary and grammar are usually introduced and practiced in the speaking and listening conversations. Obviously, each student has different strengths in learning, some students like to read and write more instead of speaking, other students like to focus on the grammar. Some students prefer listening over speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. No matter what your learning style and strength is, I’m flexible in structuring the lessons for your needs. Learning a new language has helped me open doors to new worlds that I would have never experienced before. I never thought that my knowledge of Italian would lead me to do business in Italy as a women’s basketball agent. I never thought teaching English as a Second language would land me in Oman, teaching at a technology college. They even used my voice for the tape recordings in the language lab! And I never thought that I would end up teaching Spanish at a Father Lopez Catholic High School in Florida, become the moderator of the Spanish Honor Society and even write a letter in Spanish to Pope Francis, who replied and sent a blessing to our whole school. These are some of the places languages have taken me, apart from other travels around the world. A typical lesson plan for a beginner of a second language focuses on Introductions, Meeting People, and Greetings. We can start with the basics such as: Hello!, ¡Hola!, Ciao, Γειά σας! . We’ll go over vocabulary and phrases that are typical greetings and introductions such as: “Hello, I’m Mr. Anderson. What is your name?” “Hello Mr. Anderson, I’m James but most people call me Jim. How are you?” “I’m very happy Jim. Thank you for asking. How are you?” “I’m a little sad Mr. Anderson. Thanks for asking” This conversation can be expanded by adding more vocabulary and then we continue to practice. We can also introduce and explain the grammar usage in this conversation after we have practiced a few more times. I will recap the vocabulary, phrases, and grammar learned in this lesson, assign homework as needed and answer any questions the students may have. I can teach for all levels in English, Spanish, Italian, and Greek and customize the lessons and tutoring sessions to meet your needs whether it’s test prep, or obtaining a language certificate, or just learning to converse and practice; I’m flexible to all possibilities. My experiences in teaching have been mostly with teenagers- middle school to high school, young adults- first year to final year in college or university and adults. I have taught private lessons to some younger students in the past as well. So come on in, the door is open to your new world!
