About Susan

I have been a teacher for over 27 years. I left teaching before true retirement age due to a car accident. Although disabled, I never gave up my love of teaching. I have been tutoring for 5 years, both privately and working with a company.

According to many of my friends and family, I am the busiest retired person they have ever met. I can say that I truly love teaching and have never met a student I didn't want to help.

As a teacher, my first love is Math. Since I started as a High School Math teacher, I know what students will need by the time they hit 9th grade. Since I am certified in all subjects for Middle grades, I have also taught Math in all three of the middle grades, as well as, Science for 7th and 8th.

At the elementary level, I have 12 years experience at the 4th and 5th grade, Those 12 years include several self-contained years in which I did all subjects. With this wealth of experience comes the knowledge of what students will be expected to know at most grade levels in Math.

As a professional tutor, I have grown to include English at a High School level. I have even begun to tutor Spanish, which I will be honest is much tougher than learning it for myself.

In a nutshell, I believe motivation is the strongest power in a human. My motivation happens to be teaching the love of math and reading. Hopefully, I can help students create their own desire to learn and progress.

Tutoring is a person to person situation. Learning what your student knows and doesn't know is an imperative first step. Then, building skills is required. If they are failing there is a good chance there is a missing skill set from prior grades. This is where I come in. Learning that skill set and then bringing that skill to their current grade level is what is needed most. That is what I do for students who are behind in grade level or skill level.

With gifted students, I still assess what they know, I just start linking it to skills that they will need in the next grade or skill level.

Most students who are advanced lack motivation because they find day to day skills too easy and tedious. Even advanced classes only provide some deviation. Unless they get promoted in grade or find themselves in a gifted school, boredom can lead to lack of interest. Tutoring for the advanced can offer them the challenge they didn't even know they were seeking.

After retiring from teaching, I have tutored a variety of subjects in K-12. Most times I have stayed with my favorites: Math and ELA -grades 4th-10th. Using my experience in teaching to do private tutoring from the basics in fractions to Geometry, and basic learning to read for comprehension to understanding "The Odyssey." This is not to say that I do not enjoy tutoring Spanish or Science. I love to teach, so nothing is off the board.
