About Shyam
My name is Shyam (pron: SHAAM) and I am an assistant professor of political science. I am the first person in my family born in America, and speak English (fluently), Tamil (well), and am learning Nepali.
I graduated from Purdue University with a B.A. in Political Science (although my first major was physics!); my first M.A. in Political Science (with a focus on Public Law) from Georgia State University; and a second M.A. and my Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

My first 30-minute session is free because my focus will be getting to know YOU and learning more about your writing style. After reading a sample of your writing, I will offer a series of suggestions to make the essay better. Once we build a rapport, I guarantee that I will commit to working with you on writing techniques that will yield results.
What sets me apart from others is that I have almost 25 years of teaching experience at the K-12 and collegiate levels. I love working with learners of all ages; my students say I am often the first person who listened and believed in them.
Sample projects for us to work on together:
1. Writing an email or letter to ask for a letter of recommendation.
2. Undergraduate and graduate personal and diversity statements.
3. Teaching portfolios, philosophies, and statements.
4. Fellowship and assistantship applications.
5. Upgrading your resume after graduating from HS and college.
6. Resume and CV formatting and prep.
7. Prospectus, thesis, and dissertation advising and consulting.
8. Writing a query letter and/or book proposal for a literary agent.

Shyam helped me with my CV and cover letter for a job I applied for. Shyam gave me excellent and thorough feedback on how to improve my documents. Shyam has a high standard of writing, which i appreciated because I wanted to write a strong cover letter that was focused and accurately portrayed who I am and what I can offer in my application. He gave me specific edits for my CV as well as insight on what employers will be looking for in my application. I also appreciated how professional and encouraging he was when we met to discuss improvements. This made me feel more confident while applying and I will definitely be using be using his advice for future applications. I highly recommend Shyam for editing and CV/resume services for those who want strong editing recommendations.
Shyam is both an amazing person and professor! He has been a wonderful mentor since I met him at Canisius, and has remained one since I graduated. He integrates real world experiences and events into understandable class scenarios ensuring that his students are well informed and educated. He allows for open discussions where opinions are both valued and welcomed. Taking his classes are beyond beneficial for all future students.
I am writing to recommend Dr. Sriram for a tutoring position. I had the privilege of working closely with Dr. Sriram for three years, in which he was both my professor and advisor. Dr. S was my instructor for multiple courses and for my last year in undergrad I requested him as my advisor.
As both an advisor and a professor Dr. S consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to his students’ success and learning. He was always willing to revisit concepts with students and explain complex material in clear, approachable ways. His ability to adapt explanations to different students and their learning styles made his courses engaging and accessible.
Outside of class, Dr. S was and still is an exceptional mentor. As my advisor throughout undergraduate classes, he provided thoughtful guidance academically and practical advice tailored to my goals. He is always patient and attentive, and genuinely invested in helping students grow even beyond graduation both academically and professionally. These are qualities that are essential for one-on-one tutoring where individual encouragement and attention is crucial.
Dr. Sriram has created an environment that is supportive and comfortable when approaching the learning process. His attentiveness, depth of knowledge, and communication skills are beyond helpful to students. He is an excellent candidate for a tutoring role.
I knew Professor Shyam for 5 years. I have met him through the Midwest Political Science Association's Mentorship Program. As an international student, English is not my native language, so I needed to develop my academic writing as a Ph.D. student.
Shyam showed a high level of commitment to meeting me weekly voluntarily, without compensation. He spent long hours revising my writing, commenting, correcting, and recommending techniques to develop my writing. Shyam was very generous with his time and experience. He made a big difference in developing my writing, which reflected on my Ph.D. prospectus and dissertation.
My relationship with Shyam flourished into a professional mentor while I looked for an academic position. He spent a good time with me to train me how to deal with interview questions. His unlimited support and skillful techniques to transform knowledge and skills are rare to be found in one person.
I recommend Shyam because he is an educator by nature before anything else. In political science, there are many good researchers and few teachers, such as Shyam. He has a sense of caring and support that I may feel more than any American student, because I needed it as an international student.Shyam gave a guest lecture in my course and I think he does a great job connecting with students. I've known Shyam as a colleague, and I think he's an insightful and effective teacher.
I had the privilege of taking one of Shyam’s classes my senior year of University, at Canisius University. He challenged us students to think critically and reinforce our opinions with facts. He encouraged discussion in class, especially on topics that were relevant and happening in real time. He never made a student feel uncomfortable or embarrassed for sharing how they felt, even if they felt differently from the rest of the class. Shyam has a wide range of knowledge when it comes to different cultures and communities and uses that knowledge to inform his students how something they say or think could’ve harmful to others, and teaches how to approach topics respectfully. He also isn’t a stuffy professor, he is young and funny, very in touch with the world today and likes to incorporate new technology and apps into his teaching to keep things fresh. He is a strong resource for anyone looking to learn more or improve your learning when it comes to political science
I met Dr. Shyam Sriram in my very first semester of college, and from that moment forward, he became far more than just a professor. He has been my advisor, mentor, and one of the most formative influences of my undergraduate experience as a political science major. I have taken five courses with him, volunteered alongside him with various refugee resettlement agencies, coauthored articles with him, and had the privilege of serving as president of our university’s local chapter of Every Campus A Refuge under his guidance. Each of these experiences deepened my admiration for him and challenged me to grow in ways I never anticipated.
Dr. Sriram’s teaching style is both intellectually rigorous and profoundly compassionate. He has a rare ability to ask the right questions, provide candid and thoughtful feedback, and push students to think critically—not only about the material but also about the world and their place within it. His expertise and passion for refugee resettlement ignited my own, shaping my academic interests and ultimately inspiring me to pursue a career in immigration law. Through his mentorship, I learned how transformative education can be when it is grounded in purpose and empathy.
I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Sriram as a tutor because he truly changes lives. He cares deeply about his students as human beings, and he continues to invest in them long after a course has ended. His influence on my life proves to be long-lasting—academically, professionally, and personally—and I am confident that any student who works with him will have a similar learning experience.Shyam is an excellent instructor. He is easy to talk to and passionate about the material he teaches. I had the pleasure of learning under Shyam for several years during my undergraduate career and can tell you he really invests in his students' education and values those relationships.
With a strong background in research, Shyam has been featured in many publications. He was a fantastic mentor in helping me build my confidence with academic writing and research skills. When research opportunity presented itself, he always found ways to involve me in the process so I could build experience beyond the classroom.
Shyam does a wonderful job of meeting folks where they're at and helping make complex concepts digestible to students learning them for the first time. He promotes healthy discourse and welcomes perspectives that bring lived experiences to the forefront.
I would highly recommend Shyam to anyone interested in government or politics!Dr Sriram was my professor for 7 classes at Canisius University and was a phenomenal instructor and academic advisor. He helped me in achieving my career aspirations and guided me through any challenges I faced. He went above and beyond to not only teach but also mentor me during my time at Canisius. He is extremely knowledgeable and does an amazing job explaining concepts, generating discussions, and provoking thought on different academic concepts and theories.
Shyam taught my Political Science 101 class in college. His engaging, accessible content and intentional feedback helped each student grow as a learner and as a human being. He empowers his students to make the most of their education and he consistently uplifts student voices by writing and researching with them. His class changed how I see the world, and I am grateful to now call him a friend and co-author.
I had the privilege of learning from Shyam during my undergraduate studies. I cannot recommend him enough! His discussion-based teaching created a unique environment where students could share opinions about current events. While history was integrated into the classes, I enjoyed learning about current events while simultaneously understanding the history leading up to them. I am confident in my ability to read about and discuss topics, even with those who differ in opinion, largely because of his classes. Shyam has a unique understanding of students and sees them beyond just the classroom. He helps meet students where they are, and sets out to include everyone's voice.
Not only was he a great professor, but he was also a great mentor. During my application cycle to law school, he was there for me and helped me perfect my application, leading to an acceptance at my dream school. His combination of subject expertise, teaching skill, and genuine care about his students makes him an exceptional tutor for any skill level.View more recommendations
