About Mary Virginia

My name is Mary Virginia Lucas. I am a master’s-prepared Nurse Practitioner with over a decade of clinical experience and more than seven years of experience supporting nursing students as a tutor, academic coach, and instructor. I have worked with students at both the undergraduate (BSN) and graduate (FNP/PMHNP) levels, helping them navigate some of the most challenging parts of nursing education.

I began tutoring nursing students in 2018 and quickly found that many students do not struggle because they are incapable, but because they are overwhelmed, anxious, or unsure how to approach the material. Since then, I have specialized in working with students who feel behind, discouraged, or at risk of failing. Some of my most meaningful successes have been helping students who initially failed their first semester recover, rebuild confidence, and ultimately graduate from their nursing programs.

In addition to tutoring, I have served as an Academic Coach for online BSN programs, an Adjunct Nursing Instructor, and a clinical preceptor for nurse practitioner students in urgent care and psychiatric settings. These roles have given me a strong understanding of how nursing programs teach, test, and evaluate students—and how to help learners meet those expectations effectively.

My teaching style is calm, supportive, and straightforward. I believe learning works best in a judgment-free environment where students feel safe asking questions and making mistakes. I focus on clarity, critical thinking, and confidence-building so students leave sessions not just with answers, but with a better way to approach their coursework moving forward.

If you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to get back on track, you are not alone—and you do not have to do it by yourself. I would be happy to support you through your nursing journey.

Teaching Method & Techniques

My teaching approach is supportive, structured, and focused on true understanding—not memorization. I break down complex nursing concepts into clear, manageable pieces and teach students how to think like a nurse rather than simply recall information. Sessions are tailored to your learning style and current challenges, whether that means visual explanations, concept mapping, practice questions, or real-world clinical examples. I emphasize clinical reasoning, pattern recognition, and test-taking strategy alongside content mastery.

A Typical Lesson Plan

Each session is customized, but a typical lesson includes:

A brief check-in to identify current stress points, upcoming exams, or assignments

Focused review of priority content (ex: difficult pathophysiology processes, medication classes, assessment findings)

Guided problem-solving using practice questions, case scenarios, or exam-style prompts

Clarification of “why” behind answers to strengthen long-term retention

Development of a clear study plan or next steps before the session ends

My goal is for students to leave sessions feeling clearer, more confident, and equipped with a plan.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor

I am a master’s-prepared Nurse Practitioner with extensive clinical, teaching, and tutoring experience. I have worked as a paid nursing tutor since 2018 and specialize in supporting students who feel overwhelmed, behind, or at risk of failing. I have successfully tutored students who initially failed foundational coursework and helped them progress through and graduate from their nursing programs.

In addition to tutoring, I have served as an academic coach for BSN programs, an adjunct nursing instructor, and a clinical preceptor for nurse practitioner students. This allows me to teach not only what to study, but how programs test, evaluate, and expect students to think.

Who These Lessons Are For

I work with:

Undergraduate nursing students (BSN) in all core nursing courses

Nurse Practitioner students (FNP / PMHNP) in advanced coursework

Students preparing for exams, remediation, or academic recovery

Students struggling with:
