About Caitlin
Music has been a constant thread in my life, and teaching it feels like a natural extension of that passion. I’ve spent years playing, composing, and exploring different styles, and I especially enjoy writing film-style music in my free time. Sharing that enthusiasm with others is one of the main reasons I teach—I want students to feel the joy, creativity, and confidence that come from understanding how music works. I approach tutoring with patience, professionalism, and genuine care for each student’s progress. My background has shown me how transformative it can be when someone explains musical ideas in a way that finally “clicks,” and I aim to create that experience for every learner I work with. Whether you’re preparing for exams or discovering music theory for the first time, I’m committed to offering clear guidance, encouragement, and a supportive environment where you can grow at your own pace. Teaching gives me the chance to help others find their voice in music, and that’s something I value deeply.

My approach to teaching composition, music theory, and music reading is grounded in clarity, encouragement, and steady skill-building. I like to make abstract musical ideas feel concrete, so lessons often mix clear explanation with practical examples—writing short motifs, breaking down chord progressions, analysing rhythms, or exploring how different elements of a piece fit together. Because everyone learns music differently, I adapt the pace and style to each student, whether they benefit more from visual breakdowns, listening-based exercises, or hands-on composition tasks. Lessons typically run for about an hour, giving us time to introduce new concepts and apply them in a relaxed, supportive way. I bring both practical and academic experience: I regularly compose and play, read both treble and bass clef confidently, hold Grade 5 in violin, play piano as a long-term hobby, and previously performed in orchestra. I also achieved A grades in National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher Music, and received an award for top music student in my final year. These sessions are designed for learners at GCSE, National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher level, as well as anyone of any age who simply wants to understand music more deeply. Whether your goal is exam success, improving your reading skills, or developing your own compositions, I aim to make the process engaging, accessible, and genuinely enjoyable.
