About Clare
I am an experienced English tutor, arts writer, curator, and award-winning children's author, participating in The Children's Bookshow from 2009-19. I have also written art and history books. I take a warm, academic, creative, technical, enjoyable, and mindful approach to Creative Writing, Reading Comprehension and English Literature studies, focussing on the senses, on structure and planning, and on descriptive, observational and interpretation skills that will transform your work and exam achievements, at 11+ and GCSE levels, and beyond.
I offer café tutoring classes in Richmond and in the V&A museum (Members Room) in South Kensington for £55 per hour, in designated quiet areas (by special arrangement), and with a free Introductory class at either venue. I also offer online (Teams) tuition for £50 per hour, and can discuss home tuition, though I find the above to be most effective.
I'm also experienced in teaching History of Art, for students or adults, which can be combined with mindful and creative writing classes, and occasional trips to London museums and exhibitions. I am a visiting lecturer for Art Historical London, with recent talks on Henry Moore and Anish Kapoor.
My students achieve very high standards, precision, creativity, clear logical thinking and planning, and a noted rise in self-confidence, reaching ambitious or personal goals, to fulfil their potential. This includes acceptance at top London schools.
I completed my MA Honours degree in History of Art at The University of St Andrews under Professor Martin Kemp (world authority on Leonardo da Vinci and Emeritus Professor at Oxford). This included advanced studies in English Literature and Music, with Distinction, and I continue this interdisciplinary approach in all of my work.
I am very flexible with timings, with my tutoring work running parallel to my work as an arts writer and curator, with recent exhibitions in the V&A, Somerset House, and Milan Design Week. I am also DBS checked.
From 2009 to 2019, I was a participating author in The Children's Bookshow, performing in theatres around the UK and giving school workshops on the award-winning book 'Little Leap Forward: A Boy in Beijing' - a semi-fictional account of a musician's childhood in the Beijing alleys, with a magical twist. It was written with musician and composer Guo Yues, and I also turned it into a play that toured in the UK.
I am also giving new classes in 'Mindful Writing Practice' to adults, in café, garden and museum settings. Please get in touch for details.

With over a decade of teaching experience, working with children of varying abilities and learning aptitudes, my one-hour or 90-minute English classes are bespoke as well as syllabus-focused and highly creative, tailored to the individual, for success at 11+ and GCSE levels, or for general help and improvement. Classes are possible for individuals or small groups. I take a warm, relaxed but very focused approach, which students enjoy, gaining in self-confidence and in speaking too.
In-person classes, based on a successful Parisian café model, can be in a lovely quiet café setting in Richmond, by the river (by special arrangement with the café who are very supportive), in the V&A Members Room (South Kensington), and in other locations across London, or online. I teach Creative Writing (descriptive and narrative), Reading Comprehension (prose & poetry), Directed Writing (letters, speeches, articles), and English Literature (the syllabus plays, poetry and novels), depending on the individual's needs. We work together to understand practice papers, improve planning, timing, and structural thinking, adding layers of detail, interpretation, and creativity. Interview technique and practice are also offered. My former pupils have succeeded in getting into some of the leading London schools and vocational colleges, depending on their wishes and personal goals. These include St Paul's School for Girls. Testimonials are available.
I also teach creative and mindful writing for adults, in cafés, gardens and museum settings, which can also be combined with Art History studies. Inquiries can also be made about A Level tutoring in English and in Art History.
From 2009-19, I was a participating author in The Children's Bookshow, performing in theatres throughout the UK and giving workshops in schools, which included reading practice, creative story-telling and integrated art with philosophy, tailored to children aged 8-12 years. Please see reviews on the website for The Children's Bookshow too.

My daughter had to change schools in Year 10, and therefore English exam boards, and Clare has been wonderful helping her catch up on everything she missed. My daughter found the lessons interesting and fun and really enjoyed her time with Clare. She’s absolutely the first person we’ll call if we need any more help in English!
We couldn't be happier with the tutoring our son received from Clare. He came to her lacking confidence in English Literature, but her lessons made a real difference — particularly in how he approaches structuring his answers.
Clare has a brilliant way of breaking down plays and texts into manageable sections, making even the more complex works feel accessible. She introduced him to a range of writing techniques that he was able to apply directly in his GCSE exams, and we genuinely believe her guidance was reflected in his results.
What stood out most was how she tailored each session to where he was struggling, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. He left every lesson with more clarity and, just as importantly, more confidence.
We'd highly recommend Clare to any parent looking for an English Literature tutor who really knows her subject and knows how to get the best out of her students.Dear Clare,
I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your help and support with Elaine’s English preparation.
Your guidance, particularly with her writing, has made such a positive difference. You always encouraged Elaine to be imaginative and creative in her writing, and helped her develop the confidence to express her own ideas. I especially appreciated how you encouraged her to combine her knowledge and her love of music in her writing, which really helped her develop a unique style and enjoy the process more.
With your support and encouragement, Elaine received offers for 2024 entry from St Paul’s Girls’ School, Tiffin Girls’ School, and Lady Eleanor Holles School. We are incredibly grateful for everything you have done to help her achieve this.
Thank you again for your dedication, patience, and encouragement throughout the journey.
Best wishes,
Ying (Elaine’s mum)Clare has been a wonderful support for my son to prepare for his IGCSE. She perfectly understood his needs and gave him all the confidence he was missing. She is a really good teacher: professional, reliable, and extremely friendly. I highly recommend her.
Clare is an incredibly talented writer and tutor, and really brings out genuine interest, and a balance between technical writing skill and creativity in students. She is kind, trustworthy, and highly experienced, and I would not hesitate to recommend her.
