I am a very experienced GCSE, IGCSE, AS and A2 French A level teacher, and taught GCSE and GCE for over twenty-five years - all at the same Northamptonshire Secondary school. I am very familiar with the Cambridge entrance procedures, and have a number of students who are either currently studying at Cambridge or who have since graduated. I am consistently rated as 'outstanding' or as 'good with outstanding features' in both internal monitoring reviews and by Ofsted. I am very lively, energetic, and will expect students to work hard! I have taught nearly all of the texts and films in the current AQA A level syllabus, and have a wealth of expertise (and resources!) to enable students to achieve top results. I am familiar with both DELF and DALF, at all levels, and regularly support students through their degree courses. Note also that I have a First Class Honours degree (Nottingham), an MA (SOAS, University of London) and attained QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) in 1992. Update: I am currently preparing my timetable for summer 2023. Please do not hesitate to contact me, should you have any queries. I use a variety of teaching methods, and tailor them to the needs of my students. I believe that an understanding of French grammar is the key to being able to really manipulate and 'own' a language. I pride myself on being able to simplify and demystify French, and have many students who are amazed at how straightforward French can be, when carefully taught. Most of my A level students actually choose to pursue French - at least in some capacity - at degree level... Even those who were adamant that they would not, at the start of our sessions together! I hope to encourage, inspire, and occasionally entertain (!) my students. I expect them to work hard, but the rewards can be fantastic.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I was inspired by an exceptional teacher when I was just 13. Years later, we worked together in the same school - but I always struggled to call him anything other than Monsieur Emerson! He was a fabulous teacher.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

No, as no one person - fictional or otherwise - could represent all that it is to be French. I love Balzac though, and his pantheon of characters does for me embody Frenchness with all the complexities that that denotes.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I love the silly phrase 'Il n'y a personne au balcon' meaning 'there's no one on the balcony' (ie she's flat-chested!)
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It allows me a way into the culture and people of France and francophone countries. I find that my experience of these is so much richer than that of those who aren't able to communicate in French.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Probably the grammar… But French grammar is actually very straightforward when taught carefully! I start right at the very beginning, with verb conjugation … and my students progress quickly. They are generally delighted at how much progress can be made when lessons are structured carefully to suit their needs.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Living for a long time in Paris gave me the greatest insight into France and the French. No amount of academic language study can match what it's possible to learn in intensive stays abroad.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

My energy, subject knowledge, experience and enthusiasm. I always give 100% to ensure that every one of my students makes rapid progress - but has fun in the meantime. I love French, the French and France… and it's my goal to foster that love in others. Most of my students have gone on to study French at degree level, and I am incredibly proud of their success.
