Teaching Method and Techniques:
My teaching approach is rooted in flexibility, inclusivity, and understanding, particularly tailored to meet the needs of neurodivergent learners at the high school and undergraduate levels. I utilize multimodal teaching methods that incorporate visual aids, interactive digital resources, and structured, step-by-step instructions to cater to various learning preferences and needs. Techniques such as scaffolding, where I build on students' existing knowledge and skills gradually, and differentiated instruction to address individual learning styles are core to my methodology. Additionally, I provide frequent breaks and varied types of activities to maintain engagement and accommodate sensory needs.
Typical Lesson Plan:
Introduction (5 minutes): Brief recap of previous lessons, setting the agenda for the current session, and a mindfulness minute to center focus and reduce anxiety.
Interactive Mini-Lecture (10 minutes): Introduction of new concepts using slides with visual representations and clear, concise language.
Guided Practice (15 minutes): Students engage with the new material through interactive activities such as matching games or sentence structure puzzles on tablets or computers, which help in reinforcing the concepts.
Independent Practice (15 minutes): Students work on assignments that allow them to apply what they've learned, with options to choose their mode of expression (e.g., writing a short essay or creating a visual storyboard).
Discussion and Review (10 minutes): Open floor for students to ask questions and share insights, encouraging peer learning; use of concept maps to visually summarize the session’s key points.
Cool Down (5 minutes): A short activity that relates the lesson to real-world applications, followed by a calming, structured wrap-up that outlines the next steps and expectations for the next meeting.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:
As an English tutor, I specialize in adapting to the unique challenges and strengths of neurodivergent learners. My background in psychology enables me to apply evidence-based strategies specifically beneficial for students with ADHD, dyslexia, and autism spectrum disorders. My commitment to a patient, empathetic teaching style and my dedication to creating a supportive, non-judgmental learning environment help students not only learn effectively but also build confidence in their abilities.
Who the Lessons Are For:
These lessons are designed for neurodivergent high school students and undergraduates who are looking to improve their English language and literature skills. Whether it’s enhancing reading comprehension, boosting writing proficiency, or deepening literary analysis, the lessons are customized to address both academic requirements and the specific learning needs of each student.
By focusing on these methods and structures, I aim to provide a learning experience that not only meets educational goals but also supports the overall well-being and academic confidence of neurodivergent learners.
