About Neka
Hi, I’m Neka! I am an educator, STEM curriculum designer, and quantitative systems specialist with a passion for helping students unlock their curiosity and confidence in the sciences. My academic roots began at Columbia University, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Anthropology, and I am currently completing a Master of Science in Computer Science with a concentration in Computational Biology at Columbia Engineering. Over the years, I have worked as a dedicated classroom science teacher, instructional mentor, and enterprise data analyst; these experiences taught me how to break down complex, intimidating subjects into clear, intuitive steps.
As a tutor, I support K through 12 learners across general science, biology, and chemistry. I don’t believe in rote memorization or surface-level test tricks; my goal is to help students understand how the natural world actually works. Whether I’m introducing an elementary schooler to the scientific method, guiding a middle schooler through ecosystems, or coaching a high schooler through the quantitative problem solving of chemistry and molecular biology, I meet every student where they are.
Outside of standard coursework, I design hands-on STEM programs (including teaching spatial logic and algorithmic thinking through Rubik’s Cube solving) that show learners of all ages that science and math are skills anyone can master with the right guidance. When we work together, your student gains more than better grades: they gain the critical thinking tools, resilience, and independence to succeed on their own.

My approach to tutoring centers on demystifying complex concepts across all K–12 stages through structured scaffolding, cognitive agency, and clear pattern recognition. Drawing from experience in classroom science teaching, hands-on STEM curriculum design, and technical mentoring, I view learning as an active, empowering process rather than rote memorization. In every session, I create a supportive, low-anxiety space where mistakes are treated as valuable diagnostic clues. I anchor abstract scientific ideas in intuitive, observable models, break down multi-step problem solving into manageable pieces, and use guided questioning to help students discover principles for themselves and build lasting confidence.
A typical 60-minute lesson begins with a quick, low-stakes diagnostic warm-up to isolate specific points of confusion before diving into interactive concept exploration. Through an active "I do, we do, you do" framework, students take the lead in working through questions, diagrams, and calculations while receiving real-time, calibrated feedback. Every session wraps up with an unassisted challenge to verify genuine independent mastery, followed by a brief reflection where the student summarizes the key takeaway in their own words. What sets my instruction apart is a deep foundation in the life sciences and computational reasoning, allowing me to bridge foundational concepts with real-world applications and diagnose root conceptual gaps rather than relying on temporary shortcuts.
I provide comprehensive academic support across all grades from kindergarten through 12th grade, specializing in K–8 general science, foundational and advanced biology, and introductory to college-prep chemistry. Whether introducing early elementary learners to the natural world through sensory observation and scientific inquiry, guiding middle schoolers through physical systems and the scientific method, or coaching high school students through the quantitative rigor of stoichiometry, cellular energetics, and genetics, I tailor each lesson plan to meet the student's developmental level, pacing, and academic milestones.
