About Carmen
I am a City Year Tulsa alum and AmeriCorps member with real classroom experience supporting middle students in academic growth, behavior development, and social-emotional learning. I have worked directly in schools, assisting teachers, leading small-group instruction, tracking student progress, and communicating with families and staff to support student success.
I focus on building confidence, strong academic skills, and independence in learning. I create a structured and supportive environment where lessons are adapted to each student’s needs and learning style.
I have experience in reading comprehension, English grammar, spelling, writing support, study skills, and classroom organization. I focus on helping students stay engaged, motivated, and on track in school

My approach as a tutor is structured, supportive, and focused on helping students build academic skills and confidence. I work to understand how each student learns best and then adjust instruction so they can grow and become more independent learners over time.
I use a student-centered, relationship-based approach. I break lessons into clear, manageable steps so learning feels less overwhelming. I focus on guided practice, repetition with purpose, and real-world examples so students understand the concept, not just memorize it. I also use positive reinforcement, consistent routines, and regular check-ins to keep students engaged and supported.
Each session starts with a short check-in and a review of previous material. Then I introduce or reteach the skill using simple explanations and examples. We move into guided practice, where I support the student step by step while slowly reducing help as they improve. After that, the student completes independent practice to show understanding. The session ends with a quick review and one or two goals for the next lesson.
What sets me apart is my real classroom experience through City Year Tulsa and AmeriCorps. I have supported students during live instruction, led small group learning, tracked academic progress, managed student data, and communicated with families and school staff. This experience helps me connect academic learning with behavior, motivation, and confidence building. I also focus on building trust so students feel comfortable asking questions and learning from mistakes.
These lessons are for elementary, middle school, and early high school students who need support in reading comprehension, English grammar, spelling, writing skills, and study habits. I also support students who need help with focus, organization, confidence, or keeping up with grade-level expectations. Instruction is adjusted based on each student’s skill level so they can learn at the right pace.
