About Evan

I am a dedicated tutor with 9 years of experience teaching Chess to high school and college students, having guided around 300 learners throughout my career. My teaching approach is rooted in the belief that every student learns differently, and I take pride in crafting lessons that align with each individual’s strengths, challenges, and learning styles. By combining structured instruction with creative problem-solving exercises, I help students not only understand the game but also develop critical thinking, patience, and strategic foresight—skills that extend beyond the chessboard. Over the years, I have worked with students at varying levels, from beginners taking their first steps into the world of chess to competitive players striving to refine their skills. My ability to break down complex strategies into digestible concepts allows learners to grasp opening principles, build strong mid-game tactics, and approach endgames with confidence. I emphasise accountability through goal setting and consistent progress tracking while ensuring lessons remain engaging, interactive, and tailored to each student’s pace. One of my unique skills is the ability to integrate analytical techniques into my teaching, helping students recognise patterns, anticipate moves, and develop a deeper understanding of the psychological aspects of the game. I strive to create an encouraging and focused learning environment where students feel motivated to challenge themselves, learn from their mistakes, and grow steadily as players. My goal is to inspire confidence and foster a lifelong appreciation for chess as both an intellectual pursuit and a powerful tool for personal growth.

My teaching methodology for Chess is built on three core principles: Accountability, Adaptation to Learning Styles, and Clarity. I believe that learning chess is not just about memorising moves but understanding patterns, strategies, and the logic behind each decision. I hold my students accountable by setting clear goals, tracking progress regularly, and providing constructive feedback to ensure steady improvement. Every student learns differently, so I adapt my approach to suit individual needs—whether that means using visual aids for tactical understanding, breaking down complex strategies into simple steps, or conducting practical play sessions to reinforce concepts. This personalised approach ensures that both beginners and advanced players feel supported as they work toward their goals. Clarity is at the centre of my lessons. I make sure each concept, from opening principles to advanced endgame strategies, is explained in a way that is easy to grasp and immediately applicable in games. My lessons balance theory with practice, giving students the confidence to apply what they learn in real matches. Besides Chess, I also teach relevant analytical and strategic subjects, making it easier for students to build strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. My goal is to create an engaging and empowering learning environment where students not only improve their gameplay but also develop a deeper appreciation for the intellectual beauty of chess.
