About Jay

I am a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with 11 years of post graduate experience. I achieved my membership with the RICS status in 2020 so my knowledge on the RICS APC training process is fairly fresh and I am hoping to hand this knowledge and information packs down to you. I am also a APC Assessor and registered as an accredited NEC Project Manager

I manage a team of 5 QS's and work as a Senior Commercial Manager. I assist in their training, development, and support them through their delegated duties.

This platform provides an opportunity for me to devote my time to something meaningful and give back to committed students. My passion for the profession is seen through my experience on working on some flagship projects in the UK and Saudi Arabia. I enjoy volunteering and am an RICS Inspire Student Ambassador promoting STEM to students at schools and universities.

Find out more about Jay

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been involved in the mentoring and development of apprentices and junior level quantity surveyors at work and decided that this is something I really enjoy doing, which is how I developed my interest in tutoring.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I really enjoy technical and quantitative related work such as measurement, take-offs from drawings, preparing tender documents, Bills of Quantities and cost plans, cost reports and reports in general. I do not enjoy preparing claims and writing claim reports as much.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, my main role models are my line managers who I have looked up to and aspired to be like and learn from. I encourage my students to have a close relationship with the line managers who can help them develop.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience and passion for helping your students to be the best at their craft.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Based on the RICS values, a Quantity Surveyor is someone who acts professionally, a high level of service, shows integrity, promotes trust within the profession and who is competent. To be a good Chartered Quantity Surveyor, you must uphold these core values.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Every day is a learning day for me and the construction industry is always changing and with that comes more demand for technical capabilities that require continuous development. For example, I am on a course to become NEC contract registered and am training myself on how to use Power BI software to analyse data and present data that helps drive business decisions.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is managing and supporting the development of juniors and getting them to an expert level in their technical capabilities.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Haha..good question, I am a friendly and safe pair of hands for any student wanting to progress their career.
