About Marie-Louise
About Me
My journey into supporting others began early on with a passion for counseling, which led me to serve as a LifeLine volunteer. This foundational experience in crisis intervention and compassionate, active listening shaped my entire approach to life.
When I became a mother, I was so empowered by my own experiences with birth, breastfeeding, and parenting that I wanted to spend the rest of my life helping others experience that same empowerment—even, and especially, when things do not go according to plan. As a mother of five children, I know firsthand that the transition into parenthood is as scary and unpredictable as it is beautiful. Having the right support makes all the difference.
I joined La Leche League as a brand-new mom and quickly started working on becoming a Leader myself. For years, I facilitated community meetings and provided dedicated telephone support, combining my LifeLine training with evidence-based lactation knowledge.
Professional Experience & Credibility
Over the years, I channeled this passion into building a successful, busy private practice as a professional birth doula, lactation consultant, and birth photographer. My work has spanned both intimate home settings and clinical environments; for years, I ran and presented hospital-based antenatal classes, preparing hundreds of couples for labor, birth, and life with a newborn.
Beyond my hands-on clinical and bedside work, I am deeply committed to education and advocacy on a broader scale:
Published Author: I am the author of a comprehensive book on breastfeeding (published originally in Afrikaans and translated into English by Metz Press).
Professional Educator: I have trained dozens of birth professionals and doulas in specialized breastfeeding management, ensuring the next generation of care workers operates with evidence-based, compassionate tools.
Media Contributor: For many years, I shared my insights with the wider South African public, writing extensively on parenting, birth, and maternal health for major national magazines including "Your Baby", "Baba & Kleuter", and "LiG".
My Commitment to You
When you work with me, you are not just getting textbook theory. You are gaining access to a lifetime of practical wisdom, professional clinical insight, and deeply empathetic counseling.
Whether you want to learn practical pain-management techniques for labor, figure out the hands-on side of breastfeeding, or find your feet in those exhausting early weeks with a newborn, I’m here to guide you. No judgment, no rigid rules—just honest support, decades of experience, and a warm heart.
Above all, I firmly believe that YOU are the expert on your baby... even if you don't know it yet! My goal isn't to tell you how to parent; it's to help you block out the noise and find that deep, inner confidence to trust your own intuition.

My Approach & Methodology
I believe that preparing for childbirth and the early weeks of parenting requires more than just clinical information; it requires confidence, emotional readiness, and practical skills. As a mother of five children, an experienced birth doula, and an antenatal educator, I bring a wealth of lived, hands-on experience to our sessions. Having served as a La Leche League Leader and a lactation consultant for years, and having trained dozens of doulas and birth professionals in breastfeeding management, I will equip you with practical, heart-centred, and evidence-based tools.
I specialise in turning complex medical principles into easy, relatable concepts. My lessons are designed to be accessible to absolute beginners and deeply supportive for parents whose first language isn't English.
I use plenty of warmth, humour, and engaging, real-world anecdotes to keep our sessions informative yet deeply entertaining. I want you to feel relaxed and capable, not overwhelmed.
A Unique Note on Relaxation: Because emotional readiness is just as vital as physical prep, I bring my personal and professional experience with labour hypnosis (hypnobirthing) into our framework. I can facilitate deeply restorative relaxation sessions designed to reduce anxiety, manage labour sensations, and foster a beautiful, intentional connection and communication with your baby before birth.
What to Expect in a Typical Lesson
Every session is completely customised to your specific trimester, goals, and unique birth or parenting path. We will meet privately online to unpack everything from labour physiology and pain management strategies to the practical mechanics of breastfeeding.
A typical session is a fun, collaborative, supportive conversation. We will address your specific questions, clear up common misconceptions, and practice techniques. You will walk away from each session feeling empowered, fully supported, and holding a clear, confident roadmap for the beautiful, unpredictable reality of bringing a baby home.
Languages
I teach in English and am also fully fluent in Afrikaans. I am happy to conduct our lessons, explain complex terms, or provide guidance in whichever of these two languages feels most natural and comfortable for you.
Who My Lessons Are Aimed At
My private preparation blocks are tailored for:
Parents-to-Be: Perfect for individuals or couples seeking private, tailored birth preparation instead of a more rigid, generic clinic setting.
Mothers Preparing to Breastfeed: Anyone wanting to understand milk supply, latching, and troubleshooting to give themselves the best possible start.
New Parents Seeking Postnatal Clarity: Anyone wanting a trusted guide to navigate the "fourth trimester," newborn care, and early parenting transitions.

I had the absolute pleasure of working alongside Marie-Louise Steyn for over five and a half years — first as a fellow editor and proofreader, and later as the coordinator overseeing our freelance team. In all that time, she stood out as one of the most meticulous, patient, and genuinely caring people I've ever worked with.
Marie-Louise has spent years working with the English language at the highest level of exactness. Out of a team of more than a hundred, she was in the small handful I'd turn to whenever something needed a truly fine eye — the tricky, high-stakes work where not a single word could be out of place. But what makes her special isn't just her command of English, it's how she shares her knowledge. Her feedback was always on point, given in a way that left you feeling more capable, not less. She has real patience, a gift for explaining things clearly, and a warmth that puts you instantly at ease.
For anyone learning English, those are the qualities that matter: someone who knows the language inside out, corrects you with kindness, and genuinely wants you to succeed. Marie-Louise is all of that. Any student who learns from her is in very good hands, and I can recommend her without hesitation.Marie-Louise is a patient, kind and genuinely encouraging ESL teacher who knows how to make students feel comfortable from the start. Learning a new language can sometimes feel intimidating, but she creates a supportive space where students can practise, ask questions and make mistakes without feeling judged.
Her approach helps students build their English skills at their own pace while also growing in confidence. I would highly recommend Marie-Louise to anyone looking for an approachable and dedicated teacher who truly wants to see her students improve and succeed.View more recommendations
