About Yania

I strive to respect all students’ diverse cultural backgrounds and individual learning styles. I care about what the students’ unique cultural knowledge can contribute to their learning. Some of the tenets I will always reinforce in them are that learning is a never ending process and that the more we learn the better up-to-date we are to succeed as good citizens of a globalized society.
I also strongly value the importance of motivating students. Why do they need to attend my class? What can I offer them? How can I help them build up/improve their knowledge and skills? These questions remain at the core of my teaching philosophy.
I believe in autonomous learning and empowerment in my classroom. To achieve this I create the conditions for a climate of positivism and sense of respect. I convince my students that everyone can learn. I acknowledge their progress and help them believe they can actually learn in a more independent way. I provide my students with tools and input, which they will use in their learning process. I value both the inductive and deductive teaching and learning in an English language class, as I believe in the power of discovering knowledge. Planning in connection with the outcomes is key in my teaching reflection. My experience has been that many times, learners can resolve the hardest concept before I start trying to spell it out. The teacher is the facilitator and the students are the protagonists. This way they feel empowered and more motivated to learn.
In my classroom, setting up a variety of practical activities to serve different learning styles is crucial. Finding what interest the learner, what gives an opportunity for a leading role is my main motivation. I believe a language class differs from others precisely by its natural space for an active learner participation and constant practice. I create an opportunity to achieve so through a varied lesson plan that includes an interesting hook, a thorough practice phase, and a final reflection on the learning.

I have an M.A in Teaching and Learning, in ESL, from McGill University, which allowed me to enrich and put into practice a number of tools to make my second language teaching teaching a more solid one.
I have been teaching in High School since 2010, working for private and public schools. I am presently a teacher at the Montreal School Board working for different levels. For the last 4 years, I have been teaching Spanish at the Montreal School Board for students enrolled in the IB (International Baccalaureate program) I am also a private second language teacher for young learners and adults (online). I have a wide experience in distance teaching, both asynchronous and synchronous and I am confident in using different on-line teaching platforms.
