About Alex
I am a scientist specialising in biophysical chemistry, and was recently awarded a PhD for my work on Alzheimer's disease. Before my PhD, I did an undergraduate Masters in Molecular Biology, specialising in biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, and computational/mathematical biology, during which I was awarded four separate prizes for scientific creativity and achieving top grades. In general, my training and expertise covers broad areas of chemistry, biology, mathematics, chemical physics, and programming.
I am a strong believer in the ability of science to change the world, and I want to get more young people engaged with scientific research and technological progress. In addition, I am still active in research, so I can speak from first hand about research careers and the scientific process, and I am more than happy to give students advice and support on pursuing a career in science.
I am happy to share qualifications and my DBS check upon request.

I have a passion for science and learning, and I want to share my knowledge and enthusiasm in order to help you achieve your very best. Lesson content will be guided by your individual needs, but my approach particularly emphasises laying a solid groundwork, developing lateral thinking skills, and highlighting the connections between different topics, as I find this is the best way to truly understand a topic and develop a lasting proficiency.
I provide general biology tutoring for A level students, and teach specialist topics (biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology) up to undergraduate level and beyond. In addition, I am happy to teach mathematics or computer programming where required. I teach on weekday evenings and weekends, and lessons have a typical length of 1 hour, although I am happy to be flexible. Lessons consist of a combination of general teaching and addressing concerns about specific topics, and I prefer an interactive style of teaching, asking lots of questions to assess your knowledge along the way, and giving practice questions or learning suggestions at the end. For tutees who want more or find a particular area fascinating, I am also happy to recommend or teach additional areas to complement the curriculum.
As a tutor, I am enthusiastic, approachable and understanding. I have recently moved to private tutoring, but previously worked as a postgraduate teaching assistant during my PhD, teaching biology, chemistry and mathematics to classes of undergraduates, and providing one-on-one supervision for Masters students and interns.
