About Thomas
Hello! My name is Thomas and I am a biochemistry university student with experience tutoring high school chemistry through the nonprofit Breakthrough Silicon Valley. I have maintained an A average through my university classes, including in chemistry, physics, and engineering courses (4.0 GPA), and am well acquainted with what is needed to teach high school level chemistry, as well as the basic struggles associated with learning the material.
Why chemistry? Everyone has their reasoning for loving their subject, but I personally think chemistry is especially important as it is so fundamental to all of the sciences, especially to our understanding of ourselves. Physiology, the study of the structure and function of the human body, is so rooted in chemistry that it would be almost silly to try to understand how one's body works without having a grasp on basic chemistry. Ever wondered why we're made of water and not something else? Because of the molecular structure of water and the way the electrons align themselves within the water molecule. Fascinating stuff. Chemistry has applications to many other fields as well, whether you want to be a doctor, a pharmacist, a biologist, or even something less related to the life sciences such as a mechanical engineer, chemistry plays a fundamental role, and high school is the time to get a grasp on the basics.

General:
I tutor online through video meetings. Students will meet with me at the designated time and we can expect to spend most of the time working sample problems. I like to keep the student engaged, so I will be asking them questions throughout the working of the sample problem to get them thinking, and in some cases, I may ask the student what I should do next when solving a problem, so I can check for understanding of the material. I will try to get the student to have some interest in what they are learning by going over interesting examples with applications to other areas in science, as I believe students who are interested learn the best.
Review Sheets:
At the end of the meeting or afterwards, I may send a "review sheet" with material for the student to take a look at, including links to videos, readings, etc. This should be reviewed before the next meeting. I can also send review sheets upon request for exam preparation, for my regular students.
Unusual Questions:
In some situations, I may need to think about a problem the student has presented me with before being sure of the solution. For problems like this, I will move on and send the work for the problem later after I've had a chance to check it over. I do not want to waste students' time.
Homework Policy:
While I can help if a student is having trouble on homework problems, I have certain expectations because I want to help my students learn, I do not simply want to do their homework for them (which does not result in learning, and ultimately will lead to poor understanding of the material and poor performance on exams). If a student wants help on a homework problem, I expect that they have 1) attempted the problem on their own, and 2) will go and solve similar problems after on their own. For this reason, if a student presents me their worksheet of homework problems and asks for help on all of them, I'll provide guidance for some, and then instruct the student to work more problems on their own and contact me if more help is necessary.
