About Karina

My name is Karina and I am a recent graduate from University of California, Santa Barbara. During my university career, I majored in History of Art and Architecture and extensively studied Italian language. I love helping students become passionate about their studies and coursework, and watching them flourish and succeed. I have been tutoring and mentoring students for the past seven years, beginning in high school and continuing throughout my college career, and have worked with students ranging from the elementary to graduate school level. I am excited to work with students of all ages and backgrounds. I enjoy tutoring and teaching English and Writing for all subjects; however, when I am not tutoring, I love traveling, doing arts and crafts, playing with my cat, and practicing swing and ballroom dance.

Rather than instruct students with what I believe is the best approach, I try to ask my students open-ended questions in an effort to have them think about the assignment and how we might tackle the issue. For writing assignments, I often have my students outline what their papers or assignments are going to discuss, and as we work through a paper together, I use that outline as a checklist to make sure that all of their thoughts and ideas were conveyed in the assignment. I also like using the scaffolding approach where I will demonstrate a skill or correct a grammatical problem, explaining to the student the reasoning behind the correction, and then when I see a similar error or problem, I will ask the student what they think is the best way to remedy the error, hoping that they will notice patterns from the previous correction and automatically fix the mistake themselves. I never pressure my students into accepting my advice or incorporating my feedback. I believe that each student's work belongs to that student, and my job as a tutor is to provide guidance and assistance, but ultimately, the students have the final say on what feedback they want to incorporate. I also always try to develop a rapport with my students to help them become more comfortable and relaxed during the tutoring session because I think the student receives better results when they are at ease.
