About Savanna

About Me

Hi! I’m Savanna, an English and Spanish tutor who attended Columbia University, where I earned a B.A. in Film & Media Studies and completed Columbia College’s renowned Core Curriculum.

Through the Core Curriculum, I received rigorous training in critical reading, analytical writing, discussion-based learning, and interdisciplinary thinking. My coursework included Literature Humanities, Contemporary Civilization, Art Humanities, Music Humanities, Frontiers of Science, and University Writing, where I engaged deeply with foundational texts and ideas — from Homer, Plato, and Toni Morrison to Gandhi, modern scientific thought, and the arts.

In addition to my academic background, I have spent extended time traveling and living in Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica, as well as other Spanish-speaking regions. This immersion has strengthened my fluency, cultural awareness, and conversational confidence, allowing me to teach Spanish as a living, practical language, not just a textbook subject. I am a highly advanced Spanish speaker with a strong grasp of grammar, vocabulary, and real-world usage.

My Spanish instruction is informed by immersive, real-world experience across multiple Spanish-speaking countries, with an emphasis on natural conversation, cultural context, and confidence.

I support students with:

Academic English (reading comprehension, essays, grammar)

Spanish (beginner to intermediate conversation, reading, and writing)

ESL / ELL support

Creative writing and storytelling

Building confidence in speaking and written expression

My background as a screenwriter and filmmaker informs my teaching style: I use a story-driven, engaging approach that helps students understand meaning, context, and voice. I tailor each lesson to the student’s goals and pace, creating a supportive environment where students feel confident asking questions, making mistakes, and growing.

My Approach as a Tutor

Teaching Method and Techniques:

I use a student-centered, story-driven approach that combines structured guidance with creative exploration. Lessons focus on active learning: I encourage students to read critically, write analytically, and speak confidently. For Spanish, I integrate real-world conversation, cultural context, and immersion-based methods, not just textbook exercises. My goal is to connect content to the student’s interests while fostering analytical thinking and strong communication skills.

I use techniques such as:

- Close reading and discussion of texts to understand theme, character, and structure

- Writing exercises and drafts with iterative feedback

- Practical conversation and role-play in Spanish

- Storytelling methods to strengthen voice, argumentation, and narrative skills

- Guided reflection to help students internalize lessons and apply them across subjects

- Typical Lesson Plan

Check-in & goals: Review previous work & clarify objectives

Warm-up exercise: Short reading, writing prompt, or conversational activity

Core lesson: Deep dive into grammar, writing structure, reading comprehension, or Spanish conversation

Interactive practice: Exercises, role-play, or applied writing tasks

Review & feedback: Highlight strengths, provide actionable improvement steps

Homework / next steps: Optional assignments tailored to the student’s pace and goals

What Sets Me Apart:

Interdisciplinary training: Columbia’s Core Curriculum taught me to analyze literature, history, philosophy, science, and the arts — which I bring to lessons for depth and critical thinking.

Professional storytelling experience: My work as a screenwriter and filmmaker gives students unique insights into narrative, character development, and expressive writing.

Immersive Spanish expertise: Years of travel and living in Spain, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica allow me to teach authentic conversation, idioms, and cultural context.

Personalized, adaptive teaching: Lessons are tailored to the student’s level, goals, and learning style, ensuring maximum engagement and measurable progress.

Who My Lessons Are For:

I work with a wide range of learners, including:

- Elementary, middle, high school, and college students needing support in English (reading, writing, grammar) or Spanish (conversation, reading, writing)

- ESL / ELL learners seeking confidence and fluency in English

- Creative writing or storytelling students working on essays, narratives, or scripts

- Students preparing for college, exams, or academic projects who want a structured, high-level, discussion-based learning experience

- Youth learners looking to strengthen language skills or build fluency in Spanish

Key takeaway: My lessons are interactive, intellectually stimulating, and practical, combining rigorous analysis with creative exploration. Students leave not only with stronger skills but also confidence in applying them across contexts.
