About Xavier
I hold a PhD in English Literature and have devoted most of my professional development to teaching and tutoring writing. I have 7 years of experience (and counting) with holding one-on-one consultation or conferencing sessions with both students in my own classes and with clients seeking writing tutoring services.
I also have closer to 9 years of experience assisting both friends and clients with revising and refining application materials for medical school, graduate programs, and other formal writing aimed at admissions or employment.
I am best suited to serving clients who recognize the benefits of having an actual human assist with human writing tasks, and accordingly, I will NEVER make use of any AI services at any stage in the process of working with clients.

In sessions with me, I am more than happy to assist clients with brainstorming, or revising for writing in genres ranging from Personal Statements, Short Essays, Cover Letters, Creative Writing, Research Papers, and potentially more.
My consultation style is oriented around getting you to become more cognizant of your habits and tendencies as a writer, to figure out how we can best align those with your goals.
For a first session, you should bring a piece of writing that you would like to work on together and be prepared to tell me a little bit about the writing task that brings you here:
What writing concerns bring you here today?
What genre of writing are you working on?
Who or what are you writing for?
What are you hoping to be able to accomplish with this piece?
What immediate concerns do you have coming in?
Is there anything else you'd like me to know about your relationship to writing, or to the specific piece you're working on?
Sessions after the first one will largely proceed based on mutual agreement about what seems best for you as an individual writer, or for your writing task. But generally speaking, you should still aim to send me something to look over before we meet--ideally at least a day in advance.
It's okay if you can't send something in advance, but understand that this will mean I'll need to cold-read your writing rather than having feedback ready at the start. That CAN be a good thing, as it means a decent bit of time gets devoted to reading over your work together. But be mindful of how you want to spend our time together.
If you feel that you would benefit from this kind of writing aid, I look forward to being of service to you!

Xavier has an incredibly profound knowledge of language and how it works, the result of a lifelong passion, and he is capably able to bring it to bear in in-depth, individual tutoring sessions. He excels in one-on-one formats and takes the time to understand you, what you want to say, and how you think, balancing rigor and strong standards with a lot of personal insight and compassion. As a fellow Ph.D. student at the Johns Hopkins English Department, I've benefited directly from him in my dissertation writing, and I've also seen him help students of every major, background, and writing level as a Writing Center tutor—he's prepared to help just about anyone improve. (Needless to say, he received excellent evaluations as a tutor!) Highly recommended.
