About Esther

I’m a recent graduate from the University of Cambridge, where I was ranked in the top ten out of my year of one hundred and ninety-one students in my second year and achieved First-class Honours for my undergraduate degree. I recently obtained offers to study for my MPhil degree from both the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and I am currently preparing to undertake it on a scholarship from Cambridge. I have experience of teaching from the age of 16, when I worked as an assistant teacher instructing and assisting students ranging from the ages of 8-14 in the pursuit of their own unique projects. Since then, I have worked as a student ambassador for multiple Cambridge outreach initiatives designed to help promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds bridge the gap to a Cambridge offer through developing university-level skills and literary critical approaches. As part of these initiatives, I have conducted informal classes on the Cambridge admissions process for English literature, with a special focus on personal statements and how best to present yourself in the admissions process. I have obtained a DBS check for this work. During my undergraduate degree, I also worked as an English Student Representative, sitting on the Faculty of English’s decision-making committee, the Faculty Board. In this capacity, I have been part of professional discussions about what Cambridge looks for in its prospective applicants, making me particularly qualified to coach for the Oxbridge admissions process. I’m eager to teach a variety of ages, from preparatory, KS3 classes to A-level. I also offer tutoring for Oxbridge or Russell group university applicants to prepare and support them during the admissions process, both with entrance exams and interviews. I’m happy to teach a GCSE or A-level syllabus for students out of school for any reason; I can also supplement school teaching during revision season, marking essays or providing support for students who want a little extra help with exams. I also work on specific skills or aspects of studying English that students find challenging: essay structuring, academic style and close analysis, for example.

I typically teach 50 minute-1-hour long classes, as I believe this gives students the best opportunity to discuss their work in depth and leads to the best learning experience. However, I can accommodate shorter or longer classes if it fits the student’s or their family’s timetable better. Having studied with a variety of tutors through my own GCSEs and A-levels, I’m convinced the best teaching happens when you adapt yourself to what your student needs and the ways that they learn best. For this reason, I recommend using the first lesson to have a friendly chat about each student’s objectives and what they want to get out of my classes. From here we can put together the schedule of teaching that works best for their goals and what specifically they want to work on. I believe in being prepared: when doing my own work, I am hardworking and meticulous, and this is the attitude that I bring to teaching. For students preparing for exams, I will suggest using past papers and exam board mark schemes to make sure my students are prepared for the exact assessment form they will meet in the exam. This approach also helps me to identify particular skills to work on, which we can then isolate and work on in more detail. One of the most satisfying aspects of one-to-one teaching is adapting the lesson to the student: if there’s a concept or skill that the student finds tricky, we can take as long as we need to work on it together – in other words, we can work at the pace that works best for each individual student. I believe that building confidence is extremely important. I always comment on what the student is already doing right, and I take care to praise progress, effort and good work. I’m also interested in what students do in their spare time, and I’ll always try to relate the work we’re doing to their personal interests to make it as interesting for them as possible. The best work comes when the students are invested in their own work and can take pride in their achievements. My teaching style is articulate and empathetic. From my own experience as a student working with tutors, I can remember what it felt like to be shy or under-confident, and I’m particularly keen to encourage students who don’t find expressing or advocating for themselves easy.
