About Vanessa

My journey with the English language began as a challenge and transformed into a lifelong passion. After moving from Brazil at the age of ten, I navigated the British school system as an English language learner—a lived experience that allows me to empathise deeply with students facing their own academic hurdles. This early immersion sparked a love for the rhythm and evolution of English that has defined my career.

My academic foundation was built at Queen Mary University of London, where I immersed myself in English Literature and developed the high-level analytical skills I now pass on to my students. This formal training is complemented by over eight years of private tutoring and professional experience within established educational companies. Having worked as a Teaching Assistant and School Librarian at Hammersmith Academy, I have a comprehensive understanding of the UK curriculum from Primary through to Sixth Form.

Beyond the classroom, I am a writer and creator. My relationship with the written word started early; as a child poet, my work was published on several occasions, and I have carried that creative spark into my adult life. Today, alongside my tutoring, I continue to explore the versatility of the language through spoken word poetry.

This blend of academic rigour and creative practice allows me to offer something unique: I don't just teach students how to pass an exam; I teach them how to find their own voice. Whether we are dissecting a medieval text or structuring a sophisticated A-Level essay, my goal is to help students approach English with a "childlike" curiosity and an adult’s precision—unapologetically and with total confidence.

With over eight years of private tutoring experience and a background rooted in prestigious institutions like Queen Mary University of London, Hammersmith Academy, and Razzi's Educational Ltd, I have developed a teaching style that moves far beyond rote memorisation.

My 60-minute sessions are designed as intellectual workshops where literary texts come to life. My approach is built on these four core pillars:

Beyond the Textbook – Socratic Dialogue: I do not believe in simply ticking boxes. My lessons are centred on deep critical thinking discussions. I teach students how to "dissect" a text, identifying linguistic nuances and exploring the historical and emotional contexts that a standard mark scheme might miss.

The "Safety Net" Formula: I understand the immense pressure of GCSE and A-Level exams. To combat this, I provide students with a logical structural formula and "safety net starters"—pre-framed conceptual openings that give them the confidence to begin any essay, even under intense exam pressure.

Translating Ideas into Sophisticated Writing: A central focus of my method is the "transfer." We take the complex ideas generated during our discussions and learn how to translate them into a sophisticated, academic essay style. I help students refine their vocabulary and structural transitions to ensure they impress examiners with both clarity and depth.

Multidisciplinary Insight: My time as a Teaching Assistant and School Librarian at Hammersmith Academy provided me with a unique perspective on the UK curriculum and how students interact with resources. I bridge the gap between being a librarian who understands the "world of books" and a tutor who understands the "world of exams."

A Passion for Linguistic Complexity: Ultimately, my goal is for students to fall in love with the English language. When a student understands the "why" behind a writer’s choice, exam preparation stops being a chore and becomes a natural, intellectual exploration.

Whether preparing for the jump to GCSE or mastering the rigours of Sixth Form, my methodology provides the rigorous scaffolding needed for top marks while fostering the creative freedom for students to find their own unique academic voice.
