About Marilese

I am an experienced middle school English Language Arts teacher with a master’s degree in psychology with an emphasis in forensic psychology. I currently teach seventh- and eighth-grade students and have experience supporting learners with different abilities, confidence levels, and learning styles.

As an educator, I am patient, encouraging, and committed to making learning feel manageable. I especially enjoy helping students strengthen their reading comprehension, improve their writing, organize their ideas, and become more confident in the classroom. My psychology background also helps me understand how motivation, emotions, and individual experiences can influence learning.

Outside of teaching, I am continuing my education in counseling. I understand how important it is for students to have a supportive adult who listens, explains concepts clearly, and celebrates their progress. My goal is to help every student feel capable, supported, and proud of what they accomplish.

My approach as a tutor is supportive, structured, and personalized to each student’s needs. I begin by identifying the student’s strengths, areas for growth, learning style, and academic goals. I explain skills in clear, manageable steps, model examples, and then guide students through practice until they feel confident working independently. I use discussion, visual examples, graphic organizers, real-world connections, and frequent comprehension checks to keep lessons engaging.

A typical lesson begins with a short check-in and review of previously learned skills. Next, I introduce or reteach the day’s concept using direct instruction and examples. We then complete guided practice together before the student attempts the skill independently. I end each lesson by reviewing what the student learned, answering questions, and identifying the next steps. Lessons can also focus on current homework, upcoming assessments, essays, or specific skills requested by the student or family.

What sets me apart is my experience as a middle school ELA teacher and my educational background in psychology. I understand that academic struggles are not always caused by a lack of ability. Confidence, motivation, anxiety, attention, and previous classroom experiences can all affect learning. I work to create a patient, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. My goal is not simply to help students finish an assignment, but to teach strategies they can continue using independently.

My lessons are best suited for upper-elementary, middle school, and high school students who need support with reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, essay organization, literary analysis, or general ELA coursework. I can also assist college students with academic writing, organization, proofreading, and APA-style assignments. Lessons are adapted to each student’s grade level, course requirements, and individual learning goals.
