About Susannah

My name is Susannah Lieuallen, and I have been tutoring English for over ten years! I have taught middle school creative writing and ELA. I have a passion for reading and writing, and I firmly believe every person is capable of being wonderful and productive readers and writers. Sometimes this means having a little extra help, but more often than not, it simply means a student has a different way of learning that is hard for a teacher in classroom to meet. That's where I come in! Working one on one or in small groups allows me to focus in and really engage with a student. I always tell my students this one aspect of ELA that many people do not think of, especially those students who don't like reading or think it is important. Here it is: Every person has a voice. For some it's their words spoken to others. For some, it's their thoughts shared through writings. Either way, literacy means communicating. Some do it through music or art. Still, at some point you are going to want the people around you to hear that voice. There is a fact that you must accept. For people to respect that voice and want to hear it, you must speak in such a way that people cannot refuse to hear you. If you cannot clearly express yourself through written or spoken words people are much less likely to hear you. And, I don't know about you, but I think you deserve to be heard. I look forward to teaching your student! Mrs. Lieuallen

See what needs to be learned! Make learning that skill fun! Make sure we can perform that skill once the lesson is over! Lesson plans are offered from ages K-12. A typical lesson will include: beginning diagnostic testing, a game for learning immersion and practicing a skill, a practical use of skill, and ending task. This will allow me to see where your student needs help the most. When covering literature, a lesson will involve analysis discussion and specific methods used to critically analyze a text for rhetorical inferences. From there we would discuss formatting and writing skills. After the formatting, brainstorming, and reference material collections have been addressed, we will then move onto grammar and a collated essay to completion. If we are focusing on ELA grammar, a lesson will begin with a diagnostic assessment then focus on student driven practice and problem solving. This means that as teacher and student we practice going back and forth learning and revising sentence structure and word usage until a specific grammar skill is mastered. A student that is at the entry to literacy phase will be focused on phonetics and intervention literacy skills. This means, we trim learning down to the specific elements it takes to read and speak English correctly. Classes will be held through Zoom or Google Meets. Email will be necessary to give print out documents for classes.
