About Martin

# My Photography Journey

I first picked up a camera as a curious teenager back in the ’70s. It wasn’t fancy—in fact, it was pretty rough around the edges—but it opened a door to a whole new world of creativity and storytelling that completely captivated me. In my early twenties, I finally saved enough to buy my first SLR. Those were the days of film, when digital wasn't even a distant dream. Learning to shoot on film wasn’t easy or cheap, but each roll challenged me and fueled my passion, I made many mistakes but I learnt from each one learning patience and precision. I spent years traveling across Australia and 14 other countries, chasing light and moments on slide film, and those images still hold a special place in my heart.

By the late ’90s, I got my hands on my first Kodak 1mp digital camera. Let’s just say it was a short-lived affair—I sold it after three weeks and happily returned to film! But digital’s potential was undeniable, so a few years later, I embraced it again with a trusty Canon G2. Traveling the world with both the G2 and my film camera was magical—I’d setup my shots digitally, tweak settings till they were just righton then capture the perfect frame on film. It truly felt like having the best of both worlds.

From there, my gear evolved with me: various higher end Canon compacts, then the legendary 5D series—5D, 5DII, 5DIII, and 5Ds—paired with an array of L series lenses. The original 5D changed everything for me, finally allowing me to put away my film cameras, and every new iteration just pushed my creativity further.

Now, I shoot professionally with Canon’s R series mirrorless system, but here’s something that’s at the core of all my work: it’s not the camera, it’s the artist behind it. You don’t need the latest, most expensive gear to create images that stop people in their tracks. It’s your vision, your passion, and your unique way of seeing the world that bring your photos to life. One of my proudest national competition wins came from a cropped shot on from beloved old G5, a reminder that great art comes from you, not just your equipment.

No matter your budget or gear, the most important thing is your story—your creative magic. My goal is to help you discover your style and bring out that magic in every shot you take and not to teach you to copy me.
