Avid coder - I love algorithms and puzzles, both creating and solving them. C++ is my forte, though one doesn't need to explicitly "learn" different programming languages if one understands the basic tenets of programming itself - the rest is just syntax.

Understand the algorithm, explain it to the computer, run code assuming the role of the compiler, debug, repeat till your PC heats.
In my opinion, the biggest mistake any learner can make is trying to learn programming by rote. All one needs is a strong understanding of the concepts and algorithms (rather the techniques of creating them), alongwith loads of practice - anything you need to memorize shall be memorized woth enough practice.
