About Nicole
For over a decade now I have been involved in one way or another within the education system. I worked as an assistant to my professors back when I was still attending university, and also worked as a private tutor to my fellow classmates as well as a mentor to incoming freshmen. I developed a love for teaching that I never expected to have, and seem to thrive in challenging environments that force me to come up with new approaches or apply critical thinking skills to my own teaching methods. I've worked for programs within New York University for High School students preparing to enter college, as well as assisted in prep for state exams and SAT/ACT testing. I've also worked with middle school aged students in after school programs by curating hands-on learning experiences that keep students engaged while learning key skills throughout their development. I've worked one on one with students in their homes, allowing for more personal approaches to learning. I also have extensive experience in virtual learning, both solely through online sessions or a combination of virtual and in person. Funnily enough, ELA was not my primary focus during my time in university. I majored in the Performing Arts, focusing on vocal performance in opera and instruments such as the piano. Prior to that I had attended a private university with the intent to acquire a specialized 5-year bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering. I've had a very fulfilling educational career that has allowed me to experience various sides of the world of education, which has led me to keep an open mind and be welcoming to learning new things myself. Just because I'm an educator doesn't mean I can't learn new things, and I find I learn the most through my students. I get to see new perspectives, learn about the changes that each new generation faces in both school as well as the ever-changing and evolving world around us, as well as understanding cultural differences that make every person so unique. I also have my own deep connection to culture as a mixed Hispanic person who holds indigenous lineage. My love of culture and community has allowed me to connect with students from all backgrounds, races, and experiences! I hope to continue experiencing and learning new things as I continue my journey as an educator, and I hope to be able to share my experiences with you and your child someday!

I've been teaching various subjects within the ELA curriculum for far over a decade now, and have learned to cater to each students' unique learning abilities to curate the perfect lesson plan that works best for them.
During my initial session with a student, I take time to get to know them. I ask about what they are presently learning in school, and break down which subjects within ELA have been the easiest for them, as well as which ones have been more difficult. I ask to see some examples of their work - whether through classwork or any homework assignments such as essays to get an idea of where their current comprehension is.
Once I have an idea of where the student is academically, I then work together /with/ the student to create a plan for how we will proceed with the tutoring sessions. I make sure to remain open and flexible during sessions as I get to know the student and become more familiar with their unique learning style. Since every student learns and comprehends things differently, methods that might work for one of my students may not work for another.
I also try to keep close communication with the parents/ guardians of the student to help the parents continue to supplement learning techniques at home whenever I am not available. Additionally I offer to forward my contact information to the students' teachers to develop a cooperative effort to provide as much support to the student as is needed.
