About Joseph
I’m an aspirational teacher going through university. I’ve always struggled with dyslexia and focusing throughout lessons meaning I had to adapt my own study around these conditions but found that I flourished once I understood how to write for the exam and how to prioritise my study. Over time I have learnt that through selective summaries and structured writing I was able to consistently get 14+ in every 16 marker (scoring at least a 7 in traditional grades). Beyond this, treating every key figure and period in a more informal and fun way, I was able to understand and explain their personal motivations and stories without realising the key information I naturally stored in every story. As a person I am passionate about you doing well, I’ll celebrate every win beside you and explore every criticism from teachers. Learning isn’t linear and I don’t expect my students to understand everything every time, but through open and honest communication I hope to work with you, and adapt my own teaching to your needs.

While in one-on-one study sessions I will help with not only understanding the fundamentals of the course but ways to push your essays to the next level with highly specialised structures. These approaches benefit everyone, but particularly those who struggle with memory or conditions such as dyslexia (like myself) allowing students to learn the content at their own pace. It’s an unfortunate truth that often in exams it’s not what you know but how you write it and so over my personal study and aid from my peers I was able to create a simple exam-specific structure to secure high marks in both 16 and 12 mark questions. I understand that school is not for everyone and alternative teaching, outside of a textbook, helps many students and so I often take a more informal and conversational approach to the content, exploring history like a story as opposed to a mountain of unlearnable knowledge. Over time I am confident that I can help you push to that next grade, or beyond even your expectations. I will make lesson plans and sheets specific to you between sessions which aim to help your understanding in ways you find best. Teaching, much like tutoring, is not a one size fits all so I’ll adapt to you so that every session you can leave confident on at least one more thing! I am currently fully available outside of school hours for session lengths you can decide. No matter what, I wish you the best of luck in exam season and a wonderful life beyond your GCSE’s :)
