About Joseph
"How do they make that sound?" I couldn't figure it out. I spent years seeing different teachers and trying to teach myself, all to no avail. The moment anyone started talking to me about Jazz theory, I would be incapable of grasping a thing. But after finally finding the person(s) who talked to me in the right way, I've gone on to perform at Birdland as well as with a trio every week in Brooklyn, NY. I've made it a goal in my teaching to talk to beginners the way I wish someone would have talked to me early on. Jazz is an aural tradition, and I ensure that my teaching style is rooted in this, emphasizing the importance of listening skills and musical intuition. I studied with Barry Harris toward the end of his life and am well-versed in his techniques, which I incorporate into my lessons to help students master complex harmonic and rhythmic concepts. The greats didn't learn from books; they learned from listening to the records of Bird, Bud Powell - the list goes on. That's what I try to simulate in my lessons. So, that being said, let's have fun and jam!

I hold off on teaching reading musical notation early on because the notation/theory came SECOND. First came the SOUND, the FEELING. That is where we begin. We will be learning songs by Ear as well as developing an understanding of "harmonic function". It is MUCH easier to learn to read music after developing an ear than it is to do it the other way around.
