About Daniel

Daniel Cooper is a DMA candidate at the University of Canterbury whose research is centred around British symphonic music at the turn of the 20th century – with a special focus on the music of Sir Arnold Bax (1883-1953).

In 2020 Daniel graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Adelaide Elder Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Orchestral Conducting under Luke Dollman. During his time in Adelaide Daniel worked with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra in masterclasses and workshops, as well as receiving mentoring from renowned international conductors Simone Young, Christopher Seaman, Atso Almila, James Lowe, Giordano Bellincampi, Nicholas Carter, Benjamin Northey and Chris Dragon.

In 2019 Daniel was awarded his Master of Music with Distinction in orchestral conducting from the University of Canterbury under Mark Menzies, and in 2018 graduated with a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours in performance organ; having studied performance organ during his undergraduate degree.

Early in 2019 Daniel made his professional debut as assistant conductor and celeste soli player in the world premiere of Chris Gendall’s Violin Concerto with Mark Menzies and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. In 2018 & 2019 Daniel was an active participant for the CSO conducting workshop with Chief Conductor Benjamin Northey.

Daniel is regularly called throughout New Zealand for his work as a continuo harpsichordist. Performances of Acis and Galatea (Project Prima Volta 2017), Messiah (Napier Civic Choir 2017 & 2018), and Dido and Aeneas (Project Prima Volta 2020) have seen Daniel work closely with Project Prima Volta, Anna Pierard, Catherine Pierard, Carleen Ebbs, and Lilia Carpenelli.

“ [the continuo playing] … was always stylish, and a special feature of the whole performance.” [Peter Williams, Messiah review, 2017]

In 2019 Daniel wrote and directed a confronting ground breaking staged production of Handel’s Messiah to high acclaim. Passionate about period inspired performances Daniel is a founding member of the Seasoning Ensemble (baroque.co.nz), a revolutionary baroque ensemble based in Christchurch, New Zealand.

In 2020, as the only New Zealander in the history of the academy, Daniel was an active participant in the Australian Conducting Academy with Johannes Fritzsch in Hobart, conducting the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. By invitation only Daniel was invited to return to Australia to work with Johannes Fritzsch and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra for the ‘summer course’ of the 2020 Australian Conducting Academy [postponed]. Daniel is supported by the Dame Malvina Major Foundation, The Farina Thompson Charitable Trust, the Keith Laugesen Charitable Trust, and the Christchurch Liedertafel Male Voice Choir.
