Dr. Chiu holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Brass Performance from Boston University, where he was a recipient of the Brass Department Award. His primary teachers include Toby Oft of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Colin Williams of the New York Philharmonic, Jarod Vermette of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Don Lucas, and Gabriel Rice.

As a strong believer in the life-changing power of music, my teaching is driven by my purpose to serve and inspire students of all backgrounds to realize their full potential and leave a positive impact on the lives of others. My approach in teaching is firmly grounded in developing a healthy relationship with music making and a self-driven practice culture in my students. As a practicing teacher, I strive tirelessly to lead by example. I ensure my students feel empowered after each lesson and meanwhile hold them accountable to commit to their own daily grinds. When working with young aspiring artists, it is my goal and mission to inspire the drive and commitment to pursue excellence in them, and to be adaptable in coping with challenges and learning from setbacks. Especially during times of difficulty, I love to encourage my students to follow their curiosity and guard their motivation as we share the journey of music making together.

Perfect! He’s a wonderful teacher with great energy and a truly positive attitude. He constantly encourages my daughter and keeps her motivated to do her best. His lessons are engaging, supportive, and tailored to her pace, which has made a big difference in her confidence and love for music. We’re so glad we found him and highly recommend him to anyone looking for an inspiring music teacher!
Perfect! Tommy is an excellent teacher for brass instruments. In addition to his professional skills, he cares about his students for their musical techniques as well as development. My son took private lessons with Tommy for 3 years. He is always supportive, patient, and flexible. This positive experience not only helped my son joining the orchestra as a trumpet player, but strengthen his confidence for further development.
Perfect! Tommy is a great teacher. Very knowledgeable, patient, and caring for his students. I've learned so much from Tommy about making a good sound, technique, and musicality. And he is such a nice guy on top of all that. I would highlly recommend him to any player!!!

I honestly would give Tommy '10 stars' if possible!!! I am primarily a songwriter, but I wanted to learn the trumpet just for my own personal enjoyment, and not be a virtuoso... even though Tommy is a PRO musician, he isn't annoyed by me not being able to practice often due to numerous family responsibilities... Tommy is JUST GREAT! He is smart, funny, easy-going, a pro musician and VERY KIND!!! You can't lose by having Tommy as your teacher, he will be mine permanently!!!
Tommy is a very patient and enthusiastic teacher. Even before we began our lessons, he was already very attentive to my needs and recommended instruments that are suitable for me as a beginner. In our lessons, Tommy likes to use real-life examples to help me better understand the concepts, which has been greatly beneficial to my learning and has made it much more interesting. I’m very happy to have Tommy as my teacher and I thoroughly enjoy my time with him every week!
Tommy is amazing! His enthusiasm is contagious, and he has a great ability to communicate with and to motivate my 7th grader. I highly recommend Tommy and am grateful to have found him.
Tommy was incredibly patient with our first time trombone learner. He had a very positive attitude and was encouraging for my child to keep trying even though it was completely new. Tommy was extremely organized with scheduling, sending calendar and call invites. He made it very simple. I would highly recommend him as a music teacher.
Tommy is an amazing teacher, musician, and person. He has a genuine interest his students, and is highly skilled at conveying concepts to improve sound and performance. I am an adult student, and Tommy has inspired me to new heights in understanding and playing music. He is very patient, and also a super nice person. I would highly recommend Tommy for students of all ages and levels.
Tommy is not only a wonderful trombone musician …. he is equally a great trombone teacher. He has a skilled way of expressing concepts around HOW to play technically and musically. He's patient and keeps things moving along week to week. Highly recommended!!!
During my time with Tommy, he has helped me improve in many areas. I feel that I learn and improve every lesson. Tommy is committed to teaching and points things out where I can improve upon. While teaching, Tommy uses many analogies that help me better understand what I'm doing wrong and how I can fix it.
Tommy is a great teacher. He began teaching my son Bart trumpet three years ago, and is still teaching him. Bart developed a passion for the instrument. Tommy is one of his favorite teachers.
Tommy is a very patient teacher that always guides his students to the best of his ability and works on improving their tone and musicality during lessons. We love having him as a teacher and he has helped my child grow as a musician so much!
During the last 6 months, Tommy has been a wonderfully patient, kind, and knowledgeable teacher to my 12 year-old son. He focused on my son's particular needs and provided lessons he put together to focus on areas to improve his skills. Moreover, Tommy is a talented musician, with the skill and experience to teach any level of trombone. I am very glad I chose Tommy to mentor my son in trombone.
Tommy taught my son the perfect posture and techniques for a first time beginner. He was very patient and seemed like he really enjoys teaching trombone and takes it very seriously. I highly recommend Tommy.
