About Manuel
I taught English to the most varied people: from young European and Asian students in a TEFL program in Dublin to a French “Math Sup'” student preparing for Polytechnique, via French Navy officers in the Persian Gulf.
I taught linguistics to hundreds and students (at undergraduate and graduate level in a North-American university); this experience and the theoretical baggage it implies are the major strengths of my profile as an English teacher.

Students of English of all levels, from the absolute beginner to the international executive seeking a richer vocabulary, will find in me a unique blend of :
- the rigour of a linguist;
- the inventiveness of a fully bilingual speaker of English who, from Ireland to Canada, from IBM to Hollywood, has worked in English over twenty years in the most diverse work environments.
My pedagogy draws on four sets of strengths:
1. technical -> acute understanding of the phonetic system, vocabulary and grammar of English
2. theoretical -> doctoral research on second language acquisition, with a specific interest in listening comprehension
3. practical -> ability to adapt to all learning levels, so as to build a series of classes tailored to the student's needs + ability to link my teaching activities to the the most varied communicative sources and contexts
4. artistic -> readiness to let students, via their own chosen materials, such as songs or fiction excerpts, sharpen their sensitivity to the English language as much as possible
Beyond a first hour serving to establish the objectives of a customized curriculum, I could articulate one- or two-hour classes around specific issues identified together with the student. Here are some possibilities.
- English pronunciation -> Example : articulatory and spelling mastery of vowels that sound alike
- Listening comprehension in English -> Example : the use of various cues for the segmentation of any auditory input, be it from a TV series or a radio program
- Reading comprehension in English -> Example : the search for key information in a press article, especially in preparation for the task of text synthesis as required by the French Grandes Ecoles' competitive exams'
- English grammar -> Example: the "why and how" of the Present Perfect
