About Adam
Since 2017 I have taught English Literature at the University of Leeds, a Russell Group institution and Top 100 university in the world (QS World Rankings 2026). More recently I have worked at the University of Leeds as an English for Academic Purposes tutor, preparing international postgraduate students for Masters study to ensure their future success. I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I am a CELTA-qualified tutor with experience in teaching English to beginners, pre-intermediate, intermediate, and advanced adult learners. I was awarded a PhD in English Literature in 2023 from the University of Leeds, and also have a First-Class Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree with Distinction from the same institution.

I teach using a range of pedagogical techniques, based on the needs of the student and drawing on the latest research into best teaching practices.
In each lesson I will work with you so you can reach both your immediate objectives and longer-term goals. Whether you need help comprehending a topic, understanding feedback, improving your writing style, preparing for exams, or planning, developing and proofreading written work, I can provide practical, easy-to-understand guidance.
I also hope to inspire a love of reading, writing and critical thinking. I aim for lessons to be engaging, thought-provoking and enjoyable. If you're struggling with a particular topic or have a specific goal in mind, such as an exam or assessment, I can help you by looking at the marking scheme with you, explaining the steps needed for success and making suggestions so you can 'wow' your assessors - in a voice and style that suits you. I have a great eye for detail and can closely proofread your essays and assignments.
I can help you deepen your knowledge and articulate your thoughts in compelling ways. If you want to improve your critical approach or express yourself creatively, I can help you develop your vision and present it according to academic standards. Through my lessons you will build the thinking and writing practices that will make you a better communicator for life.
In the first session, I aim to find out where you're at in your course of study and see what your goals are. We can discuss a current piece of homework or the next upcoming exam / assignment as a way of getting to know each other. I will then gauge what style of lesson will work best, assess where my help is most needed, and suggest an area of focus to meet your goals.
