My approach to tutoring prioritizes fostering a deep and complete understanding of the subject matter rather than promoting rote memorization. I believe students learn best when they can explain not just the "what" but also the "how" and "why" behind concepts. This ensures that knowledge is retained and can be applied flexibly in various contexts. Under my tutelage, you will experience conversational learning in which I engage students in meaningful discussions about the topics at hand. These conversations encourage critical thinking, allowing students to process information actively and articulate their understanding. Whenever possible, I connect lessons to real-world scenarios. This makes abstract concepts tangible and demonstrates their relevance. While my focus is on conversational techniques, I incorporate other tools, such as practice questions, via Kahoot or Quizlet, to reinforce learning and assess comprehension.
A Typical Lesson Plan
1. Warm-Up (5-10 minutes)
Brief review of the previous session’s material.
A few open-ended questions to activate prior knowledge and set the stage for the day’s topic.
2. Introduction to the Topic (10-15 minutes)
Present the core concept or topic of the session.
Encourage initial reactions, questions, or thoughts from the student.
3. Guided Exploration (20-30 minutes)
Dive deeper into the topic through a conversational approach.
Ask guiding questions such as:
“How do you think this works?”
Work together on problems or case studies related to the topic, with the student taking the lead as much as possible.
4. Practice and Reinforcement (15-20 minutes)
Solve practice questions collaboratively,
Include a mix of question types (open-ended, practical problems, and some multiple-choice for variety).
Discuss the reasoning behind each answer to solidify understanding.
5. Reflection and Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
Summarize key points learned during the session.
Ask the student to explain one or two concepts in their own words.
Discuss any areas of confusion or difficulty to address in the next session.
6. Homework/Follow-Up - Kahoot/Quizlet
By emphasizing conversational learning and building a robust understanding of the material, I aim to empower students to think critically and confidently approach challenges in their studies.
