About Jonathan
I'm a digital & traditional artist with more than 5 years' professional experience as a print and digital (UI/UX) designer. I graduated with a Bachelor of Design from RMIT with training in both 2D and 3D suites. I am currently transitioning toward a career as a concept artist, as it's my passion to collaborate with people to tell stories through art and design.

I personalise lessons towards your goals (e.g. improving drawing skills, preparation for VCE Studio Arts, portfolio development, Photoshop proficiency, etc.).
With each lesson, we'll go through practical exercises and explore relevant theory. I will leave you with tangible information and exciting new resources that you can apply and refer to outside of class. You'll foster a rewarding skill-set that will allow you to tackle any challenge, and still be able to have fun with it!
If you're already a student in university or high school, I won't be adding to your workload – instead, you'll be more prepared to approach your study with confidence and ease.
Class times may vary depending on your goals and availability, and you're welcome to change your focus/goals!

Here's what one lesson might look like for a student studying Studio Arts in VCE (let's call them Alex):
Like many Studio Arts students, Alex is studying the practices of master artists and exploring a range of media simultaneously. Alex's class is investigating Basquiat, and is finding it hard to connect with the material, especially in the context of their own artwork. It's possible that Alex has learnt a lot about the interpretive value of Basquiat's paintings, but has been left in the dark from a fine arts perspective.
0:00-0:15 – Warm-up with drawing exercises
0:15-0:30 – Value & composition theory (importance of light and shape in communicating story)
0:30-0:45 – Discuss class content, looking at Basquiat (as well as other different/similar artists I provide)
0:45-1:00 – Break down artists' work with regard to shape and value
1:00-1:30 – Value & composition demo
1:30-2:00 – Value exercises
In this lesson, Alex is shown how light and shape can be powerful narrative tools, whether for basic drawings, comprehensive artworks, or even Basquiat's crudely abstract works. Alex can apply these principles in their own work, as well as use this lens when asked to discuss Basquiat in school.
This is an example of one lesson; another might be spent with a greater focus on painting, or more in-depth look into art history. Or something entirely different!
