About Richard
Hello! I’m Dr. Richard E. Poulin III, an international educator, middle school principal, author, researcher, and nonprofit leader who believes great teaching should help students become more confident, curious, and independent.
I have more than a decade of experience working with students, teachers, and families in international schools across Asia, including Thailand, China, and Singapore. My professional background includes middle school teaching and leadership, literacy support, curriculum development, assessment, inclusive education, Universal Design for Learning, and helping students strengthen the academic and personal skills they need to succeed.
Beyond the classroom, I serve as President of Teach RARE, a nonprofit organization focused on rare disease education, family support, advocacy, and community outreach. I am also a published author of books for both adults and children, including educational resources designed to make complex medical and scientific topics understandable and engaging for young learners. My academic work has also been published in peer-reviewed and professional settings, with research interests that include educational leadership, inclusion, student support, assessment, and improving learning outcomes for diverse students.
I especially enjoy working with middle school students because these years are such an important time for developing confidence, organization, communication, critical thinking, and independence. My classes are designed to be engaging, practical, and encouraging, with opportunities for students to discuss ideas, solve problems, ask thoughtful questions, and connect learning to the real world.
As both an educator and a parent, I understand that every learner brings different strengths, interests, and challenges to the classroom. I aim to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable participating, making mistakes, trying new strategies, and celebrating their progress.
I plan to offer classes focused on study skills, reading and writing, research, public speaking, leadership, critical thinking, science and health literacy, and middle school academic success. My goal is to help students become stronger learners and communicators while making each class meaningful, relevant, and enjoyable.

My approach to tutoring is highly personalized, practical, and student-centered. I begin by identifying the learner’s goals, strengths, and areas for growth, then design sessions that combine clear instruction, guided practice, discussion, and real-world application. I use strategies from Universal Design for Learning, literacy instruction, academic coaching, and educational leadership to help students not only complete a task, but also understand how to approach similar challenges independently in the future.
A typical lesson begins with a short check-in and review of the learner’s goals. We then focus on one or two specific skills, such as organizing an essay, improving reading comprehension, developing a research question, preparing a presentation, or strengthening study habits. I model the skill, guide the student through practice, provide immediate feedback, and end with clear next steps so the learner leaves the session knowing exactly what to work on next.
What sets me apart is the breadth of my professional experience. I am a Doctor of Education, international school principal, published author, researcher, and nonprofit leader with extensive experience working with students, families, and educators across diverse international settings. I bring both classroom-level understanding and school-leadership experience, which allows me to look beyond a single assignment and help learners develop the confidence, organization, communication, and critical-thinking skills that support long-term success.
My lessons are best suited for middle school and high school students who need support with English, reading, writing, research, study skills, public speaking, organization, and academic confidence. I also work with university and graduate students on academic writing, research planning, presentations, and research methodology, as well as educators seeking support with professional growth, educational leadership, and international-school careers.
