About Melissa
Piano teaching, for me, is about finding the music inside every student and helping them bring it into the world with confidence and clarity. I’ve had the joy of working with students from many walks of life—children who’ve never touched an instrument, teens writing original songs, adults returning to lessons after decades away—and each experience reinforces my belief that learning piano should be tailored, intentional, and deeply human. I start by building a strong foundation in technique: ergonomic hand position, finger strength, wrist flexibility, and accurate rhythm. We also spend time developing reading fluency, harmonic understanding, and ear training. But I try never to lose sight of the emotional core of music. I guide students in shaping phrases, creating contrast, and discovering the personality of every piece they play. We explore genres from classical to cinematic to pop, and I regularly encourage improvisation and composition as part of the learning process. I remember one student who was too shy to speak in class but lit up at the piano; she eventually composed a theme for her favorite book series and performed it at her school’s art night. Those moments are the heart of why I teach. I also integrate creative tools into lessons—loop pedals, rhythm trainers, and collaborative listening sessions—especially with students who respond to more experiential learning. Every few weeks, we set new goals and revisit our progress, making sure the path still aligns with the student’s interests. I believe in music’s power to transform not just how we express ourselves, but how we see ourselves. My mission is to give students a sense of ownership and wonder in their playing so that they always feel music is something they can return to, explore, and grow with—no matter where life takes them.

My 6 years of experience teaching piano have shown me that the most successful learning happens when lessons are tailored to the student’s unique strengths, challenges, and musical passions. I strive to create a warm, encouraging environment where students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and celebrate progress.
Foundational skills such as posture, finger dexterity, timing, and sight-reading are taught through clear instruction and fun, engaging exercises. I carefully select or adapt music pieces from a variety of genres—including classical, jazz, musical theatre, and contemporary popular music—to keep lessons exciting and personally meaningful. I also integrate theory and ear training in practical, enjoyable ways that enhance musical understanding. Improvisation and composition are regular components, helping students cultivate creativity and ownership of their artistry. I encourage students to develop focused, manageable practice routines that foster consistent improvement and self-discipline.
Technology such as recording devices and apps for rhythm and pitch training play an important role in providing objective feedback and motivating learners. A particularly rewarding experience was mentoring a student who went from beginner to confident performer over the course of a year, building not only skill but self-esteem and artistic identity. Ultimately, I aim to inspire a lifelong love for piano by blending technique, creativity, and expressive freedom in every lesson.
