About Sophia
About Me:
Hello! My name is Sophia Kasem, and I am a motivated junior with a passion for tutoring and utilizing my technical skills to contribute to the success of an organization. Currently residing in Bedford, New Hampshire!
- I am currently a student at Bedford High School, where I am expected to graduate in June 2024. Throughout my academic journey, I have taken a range of relevant coursework, including Pre-Algebra, Algebra One, Algebra Two, Pre-Calculus, English, Biology, Physical Science, History, Chemistry, and Psychology. I have experience with different levels, such as AP, IB, CP, and Honors courses, allowing me to adapt my tutoring approach to meet the needs of students at various proficiency levels.
- As for work experience, I have gained valuable work experience in different fields, which has enhanced my skills and versatility. As an AV Technician, I have assisted in the setup and operation of audiovisual equipment for various presentation events across New Hampshire. I have also worked as a Copywriter, developing engaging and persuasive content as a freelancer on platforms like Fiverr and Freelancer. Additionally, I have served as a Hostess at Pizza Bella, providing excellent customer service and managing various tasks to ensure a pleasant dining experience for guests.
My activities and achievements include that outside of my academic and professional pursuits. I have actively participated in extracurricular activities and achieved notable accomplishments. As a member of the UNICEF Club, I have contributed to planning fundraising events and raising funds for causes within UNICEF. I have also been involved in volleyball, both on club teams and in high school, enhancing my teamwork and communication skills. Similarly, I have been a member of the varsity rowing team, cultivating discipline, dedication, and teamwork.
Furthermore, I have volunteered as a peer tutor, assisting fellow high school students in various subjects. This experience has honed my communication skills and the ability to simplify complex concepts. Additionally, I have been involved in promoting cultural awareness and acceptance through the Diversity Committee, organizing events and co-hosting a podcast on preventing racism. I have also participated in swimming and the NAMI Suicide Prevention Team, raising awareness about mental health issues and delivering presentations on suicide prevention.
Skills:
In terms of tutoring, I am proficient in teaching subjects such as Pre-Algebra, Algebra One, Algebra Two, Pre-Calculus, English, Sciences (Biology, Physical Science), and History to middle and high school students. I also possess technical skills in AV setup and operation, troubleshooting technical issues, and observing events. Furthermore, my copywriting skills allow me to create compelling website content, product descriptions, and promotional materials. With a strong focus on customer service, I excel in communication and interpersonal skills, ensuring outstanding service. I am also adept at multitasking and collaborating effectively with team members!

As a math tutor, my approach is focused on creating a supportive and engaging learning environment where students can feel comfortable asking questions and exploring mathematical concepts. I believe in building a strong foundation of fundamental skills and gradually progressing towards more advanced topics. Here's an overview of my teaching method and techniques:
Assessing Students' Needs: I begin by assessing the student's current knowledge and understanding of the subject. This helps me identify any knowledge gaps and tailor my teaching approach accordingly.
Clear Explanation: I believe in providing clear and concise explanations of mathematical concepts, breaking them down into simpler parts if necessary. I use real-life examples and visual aids to make abstract concepts more relatable and easier to comprehend.
Interactive Learning: I encourage active student participation during lessons. This includes asking questions, solving problems together, and engaging in discussions to foster a deeper understanding of the material.
Practice and Application: Practice is crucial for mastery in math. I provide ample opportunities for students to practice problem-solving, both during the lesson and as homework assignments. I emphasize the importance of practicing regularly to reinforce concepts and develop problem-solving skills.
Individualized Approach: Every student is unique, with varying strengths and areas for improvement. I adapt my teaching style to suit the individual needs and learning preferences of each student. I identify their strengths and build upon them, while also providing targeted support for areas that require improvement.
A typical lesson plan with a student might involve the following steps:
Review: Begin by reviewing previously covered material to ensure retention and reinforce concepts.
Introduction: Introduce the new topic or concept, providing clear explanations and examples.
Guided Practice: Work through example problems together, allowing the student to actively participate and ask questions along the way.
Independent Practice: Assign practice problems for the student to complete on their own, reinforcing the newly learned material.
Assessment and Feedback: Review the student's work, provide constructive feedback, and address any misconceptions or errors.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my ability to personalize the learning experience for each student. I understand that every learner has their own pace and learning style, and I strive to adapt my teaching approach to meet their specific needs. I am patient, encouraging, and committed to helping students build confidence in their mathematical abilities.
My tutoring lessons are suitable for students at various levels, including Pre-Algebra, Algebra One, Algebra Two, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. I can assist students from middle school through high school, as well as college-level courses. Whether a student is struggling with basic concepts or aiming for advanced problem-solving skills, I am equipped to provide the necessary guidance and support.
