As a writer and an instructor, I strive to present my own identity as a writer in the classroom. This is useful, I believe, in helping students conceive themselves as fellow writers and to understand the common struggles of nearly anyone in a composition course. I have found that using my own experiences as examples—such as the years it took me to become confident with personal editing or the infamous “blank page syndrome” that causes so many student writers to sit in front of the blank screen unable to get started—is useful in helping students understand the universal challenges and fears that come with composition. It’s good for them to see their instructor as a writer, but also one who sometimes struggles to produce material, generate ideas, and has a hard time, just like them, getting started.
