About Ivy

I am a piano tutor with 10 years of teaching experience and a Master of Music in Jazz Piano Performance. Over a decade I have taught over 350 students ranging from toddlers in their first music exploration sessions to professional musicians seeking to expand from their primary instrument into piano. My jazz performance background means I bring a uniquely harmonic perspective to all styles of piano teaching — my classical students develop a richer understanding of chord function than they would receive in a purely classical studio, and this pays dividends in sight-reading, accompaniment, and musical interpretation. I have published two short pedagogical guides on teaching jazz harmony to younger students, and I am occasionally asked to speak at local music education events. My performing career continues alongside my teaching, and I believe staying active as a performer makes me a sharper, more honest, and more motivated teacher.

My philosophy as a piano teacher is that technique is a means to an end, not an end in itself, and every technical exercise I assign has a direct and explained musical purpose. I open lessons by asking students to play something they have been listening to during the week — even just a melody — because this connects the instrument to the rest of their musical life in a way that formal repertoire alone cannot achieve. My approach to chord theory is unusually comprehensive for a one-to-one setting; I teach chord symbols, Roman numeral analysis, and jazz voicings side by side so students understand harmony as a system rather than a collection of isolated shapes. Improvisation is introduced early and gently — I start students with just three notes over a blues backing track and build from there, because the experience of making music spontaneously is transformative for learners of every age. For classical examination students I use a layered rehearsal method where we work on sections out of context, back-to-front, and at extreme tempos before assembling the piece, which builds security that standard run-through practice never creates. I have developed a series of five-minute warm-up sequences that each address a specific technical challenge — octave stretches, lateral wrist rotation, independent finger control — and I rotate these across lessons to ensure balanced development. My adult students often come with years of self-taught habits that need careful unravelling, and I approach this with curiosity and respect rather than correction. I use digital recording to capture key lesson moments and share clips with students so they have a reference point for practising independently. Theory homework is always short, practical, and directly connected to the music being studied. I am most proud when a student surprises themselves.
