About Niya
I am a Cornell University student studying Human Biology, Health, and Society with a strong background in biology, health sciences, and standardized test preparation. I have experience tutoring for the SAT as well as supporting students across a range of biology and health-related courses, and I approach teaching with patience, clarity, and structure. Through my academic training and tutoring experience, I have learned how to explain complex material in a clear and approachable way while maintaining high standards and professionalism. I take preparation seriously, come to each lesson with a plan, and tailor sessions to each student’s goals and learning style. Whether a student needs help building foundational understanding, improving test-taking strategy, or gaining confidence with challenging material, I aim to create a supportive and productive learning environment. I value clear communication, reliability, and respect for students’ time. My goal is not only to help students improve academically, but also to help them feel more confident in their ability to learn and succeed independently.

My approach to tutoring:
When I tutor, my main goal is to help students actually understand what they’re learning, not just memorize it for an exam. A lot of biology and health-related material can feel overwhelming at first, so I focus on breaking things down into clear, logical steps and explaining why things work the way they do. My background in both biology and SAT tutoring has shaped how I teach — I care just as much about understanding the material as I do about knowing how to approach questions efficiently and confidently.
I try to meet students where they are. Some people want a slower, discussion-based approach, while others want lots of practice problems and structure. I adjust my pace and style based on what helps each student learn best.
How I teach:
I use a mix of explanation, discussion, and practice. I often draw connections between topics so the material feels less fragmented, and I use examples from real life, medicine, or research when it helps things make sense. From my experience with SAT tutoring, I also spend time teaching students how to think through questions, spot common traps, and manage their time — skills that apply across many exams, not just standardized tests.
I don’t rush through material. If something isn’t clicking, we slow down and work through it until it does.
What a typical lesson looks like:
Most sessions start with a quick check-in and a review of anything we covered before. Then we focus on one or two main topics, going over the concepts first before moving into practice questions or problems. I’ll often ask students to explain ideas back in their own words so I can see what makes sense and what still feels confusing. We usually end by going over what to practice next or how to review between sessions.
What sets me apart:
What sets me apart is that I combine strong subject knowledge with test-taking strategy. Because I’ve tutored for the SAT and studied human biology on a pre-med track, I understand both the content and the pressure that comes with exams. I’m patient, approachable, and genuinely invested in helping students feel more confident — not just in getting the right answers, but in trusting their own thinking.
Who I work with:
I work with:
High school students in biology or health-related classes
Students preparing for the SAT who want help with science reasoning and test strategy
College students taking biology, human biology, physiology, or related courses
Pre-med students who want to strengthen their foundation or prepare for exams
I tailor each lesson to the student’s level and goals, and I try to make studying feel more manageable and less stressful.
