About Samantha
I am currently completing my Bachelor's degree in Biology with a specialization in Conservation at Trent University. After experiencing the academic changes brought on by the pandemic, I began exploring different learning styles and techniques that have since helped myself and other students feel confident in our studies no matter the learning environment (in-person vs. online, group work vs. independent). These techniques and my experiences in my academic career have helped me excel in my work and create opportunities to grow and share with others both inside and outside of my field. I truly believe that any topic can become interesting and simple to learn as long as you have the right support and understand what techniques work best for you! Each student's learning path is individual to them and can be tricky to identify at first; however, this is not a setback! I am here to help students identify challenges and use their skills to excel in their work going forward.

It is most important to me to first understand my student's learning style and to develop lessons that will allow them to not only understand the material but to excel in their work! A typical first lesson would involve setting goals for short-term (end of session) and long-term (completion of tutoring) timeframes that will be implemented into future tutoring sessions. This allows me to collaborate with students to make lesson plans that will work best for them. This can include small quizzes or presentations to put their skills and knowledge into action, making test reviews for practice, Q&A sections to explore subjects in depth, and other techniques that will help students feel confident in their learning experiences. I like to keep communication open during my lessons and encourage any or all questions to be asked as they arise!
An average session is ~2 hours but is decided by the student and their needs. If there are any questions I am unable to confidently answer I will ensure that I am doing outside research to be able to assist students to the best of my abilities during lessons. My academic background allows me to tutor those interested in Biology, Environmental Sciences, Test Prep (time management, organization tools, study guides, etc.), and Academic & Creative Writing (essays, lab reports, thesis prep, proposals, summarizing academic journals, short stories, descriptive writing) from high school to post-secondary levels.
